In a violent gale off the coast of Holland the steamer Berlin foundered with all but one of her crew and passengers lost. The lone survivor is reported ashore with injuries and is being aided by local authorities. Rescue efforts are ongoing as boats search the area.
A German steamship Berlin bound from Harwich to the Hook of Holland wrecks in a southwesterly gale off the Hook. Of 141 aboard, 90+ passengers drown. only one Englishman survives. The forward section sank immediately after striking a jetty, with life boats unable to reach the crew and passengers. Rescue efforts were hampered by rough seas.
Only a few days remain as the ditch case arbitration must proceed by Monday. The urgent deadline prompts action from involved parties and overseeing officials.
City Attorney Scott reports progress on ditch-company lawsuits in Roswell while local boxing results feature Sullivan’s win over Gardner and Lewis’s victory by knockout as the Santa Fe talks and Pope order detail proceed. The Roswell Commercial Club hosts events as Carlsbad line prospects gain momentum for El Paso connections.
George M. Slaughter, Roswell cattlemen's convention executive chair, says the April event is strictly a citizens affair not controlled by any lodge or organization. He notes finances will be handled by three treasurers and paid by checks with accounts attached to each check to verify committee approval.
Ralph H. McMichael of Pittsburg completes purchase of about ninety percent of Home Oil Company stock, gaining control. The old management has reduced the company debt as part of the deal.
Since the change two successive directorate shifts occurred with all previous directors resigning. The new officers are G. A. Richardson president E. L. Bedell vice president Clifton Chisholm secretary treasurer and R. H. McMichael and C. W. DeFreest as directors. The organization hopes to start work on the well and finish it soon.
James Woolace erects a large two story frame residence on North Pennsylvania Avenue facing west, second lot north of the Presbyterian church. The 12 room modern house will house Woolace and also offer rooms to rent. Gill Amis holds the building contract. Price set at $6000.
The county road grader finishes east Second Street and the road south to the R. P. Bean place and now continues the Second Street road toward the Northern Canal.
Albany February 20 Governor Hughes sent the senate a message recommending the removal from office of State Superintendent of Insurance Otto Kelsey. The governor faults Kelsey for conspicuously failing to perform first duties and demonstrates neglect that shows unfitness for the trust.
Mr and Mrs M H W Coughton who have been in the area for some time engaged in music left on Wednesday for Texico.
A report shows Miera pushing for a pay raise and additional manpower for the mounted police force to expand operations and enforcement capacity.
A strong Artesia delegation led by Harry Hamilton campaigns to move the Artesia county bill out of committee to the house. Cameron Mullens and Hudspeth oppose it, while Miera seeks increased police funding and more district attorney staff. Several bills are introduced, including building loan inspections, rail tax exemption repeal, and jail prisoner hiring.
In New York on February 21 the Thaw trial featured tense exchanges with Mrs Thaw and questions about letters and admissible testimony. Jerome pressed questions on conduct and relationships as Justice Fitzgerald prepared to extend court hours into Saturday to continue hearings. Meanwhile Missouri Governor Folk approved a requisition for H Clay Pierce in a separate Texas case.
J F Patterson today moved his harness store to new quarters in the Garst building. The elegant new shop offers better space for stock and display of leather goods. He invites friends to cross over to the east side and visit the upgraded location to attract new customers.
Washington Feb 21 The House District of Columbia committee reports on the Webber bill to require the suppression of liquor manufacture or sale in the District of Columbia. Minnesota notes the two cent fare bill advance with the house passing the measure in St Paul Feb 21.
