In Walnut Creek California Clyde Kendall discovered a wall that yielded paleontological treasure. April rains washed rocks from the wall and exposed a petrified legbone of a mammoth like creature. UC scientists found mannous teeth and jawbones at the quarry calling it a significant find.
Prince Souvanna Phouma, the neutralist premier recognized by the Communists, moves to form a new coalition government with Phoumi Nosavan and Pathet Lao and to discuss Laos representation at the Geneva talks. Cease-fire details include four-mile pullbacks as government and rebel officers prepare for negotiations.
The Navy launched a giant manned balloon from the carrier Antietam in the Gulf of Mexico to set an altitude record. Launch started 43 miles southeast of South Pass at the Mississippi River mouth after delays. Cmdr Malcolm Ross of Washington piloting and Lt Cmdr Victor E Prather of Bethesda Md as medical observer seek nearly 22 miles up in a 7 to 8 hour flight.
Former President Eisenhower, speaking with Republican leaders in Gettysburg, questioned whether Joint Chiefs of Staff were consulted and lamented heavy equipment loaded on a single old Liberty ship. Headquarters and Headquarters Battery of the 200th Artillery Group in Roswell will undergo its annual general inspection Monday. Lt. Col. Robert W. Daves conducted a prior inspection of Battery A. The inspection, led by Col. William E. Murphy and Lt. Cols Burl C. Lewis and Thomas Elder from 4th U.S. Army, assesses readiness across New Mexico Texas Oklahoma Louisiana and Arkansas National Guard units. Monday sessions include facilities and records checks, followed by in-ranks inspections and training-section reviews. Group commander Col. William C. Thompson Jr. of Artesia leads the Roswell batteries. Capt. Charles F. Nichols heads the H H Battery. Battery A contains four officers and 65 enlisted. H Headquarters Battery includes 16 officers, five warrant officers, and 93 enlisted.
Tools valued at 26 dollars were stolen from S. I. Rosson at 1103 FE Brown Street over the past three days. A hoe rake and orchard shank were taken from the yard. Four hubcaps were stolen from Harry Myer at 411 S. Lea Ave last night. Thieves tried to break into Garcia Pool Hall at 203 S. Main St early yesterday evening. a small window was broken but nothing appeared stolen.
Tampa AP report credits crew discipline and male students calm actions for 13 survivors when the Albatross sank in a Gulf storm. Six of 19 aboard perished. survivors aged 15 to 18 included ten boys from wealthy families. The Gran Rio rescued the group after the ship went under in one minute.
NASA began a preliminary countdown for astronaut Alan Shepard to launch at 5 a.m. Mountain Standard Time Friday. Weather improved with a 50-50 chance of launch, while the capsule tests and heart sensor checks proceeded and preparations continued for the final countdown at Cape Canaveral.
Robert J. Meisenbach, a 23 year old University of California senior, was acquitted of clubbing a police officer during the City Hall riots last May. The acquittal comes amid continuing controversy over the riots and a House committee hearing on un American activities. Meisenbach celebrated with a beer party, attended by jurors and students.

SILVER CITY AP 62-year-old Mimbres River resident Theodore Lucero became New Mexico's 98th highway fatality of the year when struck near Silver City while walking to catch a ride on U S 260. Driver Leo Ledoux of Silver City said sun glare blinded him momentarily. Lucero died at the scene. The report notes 133 highway deaths had occurred by this date last year.
