Court decision split Bird nets victory in transfer battle

In a 3 to 2 ruling the New Mexico Supreme Court held State Highway Engineer James Bird is exempt from a 1935 transfer law, blocking Gov. Apodaca from removing him. Chief Justice McManus said Bird may not be moved and must devote full time to highway duties. The decision limits gubernatorial authority over high level posts.

Convicted Davis seeks set asides for bribery case

Charles Davis asks the Santa Fe District Court to set aside his conspiracy conviction in the Employment Security Commission bribery scandal or grant a new trial. Court overturns Chaves decision

The New Mexico Court of Appeals reverses a Chaves County District Court ruling that confined a juvenile to the Boys School. The case was deemed outside district court jurisdiction when the amended judgment was entered May 6, with mandate issued May 18. The 16 year old, identified as John Doe, was arrested in August 1976 for heroin trafficking and found guilty.

New snow opens beginner lifts at Sierra Blanca

In Ruidoso the Sierra Blanca Ski Area runs the baby T bars and Mighty Mite lifts after about two inches of fresh snow fell Wednesday. General manager Roy Parker said operating lifts are rated fair to poor and all other runs remain closed, with more snow expected this weekend.

A clairvoyant from Orlando helped the Daley family search for George R. Daley who disappeared last September. Her reading tied to a desert burial near Roswell led to the discovery of a body near U.S. 380 and the Pecos River. Police later arrested a suspect for murder. another person remains sought as a suspect.
