Striking farmers seek support from area growers

Jerome Friemel, spokesman for American Agriculture, urged Chaves County farmers to join the nationwide farm strike now in its third week. He blamed the 1977 Farm Bill for hurting farmers and said the movement began in Colorado over three months ago and is gaining national support among about 100 meeting attendees.

Roswell murder suspect jailed on no-bond warrant

Richard Darrel Ricky Stephens 18 of Roswell is jailed in Chaves County on a no bond murder warrant issued after a body was found seven miles east of Roswell. An arraignment date is pending. Authorities identify the body as George Daley, missing since Sept 6. A multistate manhunt continues for Stephens’ stepfather Donald Stephens, also charged with murder. A $2000 reward for information leading to Daley’s whereabouts may be distributed next week.

Roswell is seeing a boom in industry and construction in 1977

Absent-minded bandit robs motel before mask recall

Police hunt for a well dressed man in his 40s who demanded cash after entering a West Palm Beach motel. He brandished a gun, wore a nylon stocking as a mask, struck the clerk, and fled with less than $100 after finding no vacancies.
