The Roswell post office reports its busiest Christmas season and growing overall mail volume. From July 1918 to July 1919 the office handled 7200 insured packages and 2300 COD shipments, with 6100 outbound mail by December 22 and 1600 CODs sent so far this year. Washington Dec 26 The heads of all railroad unions will convene in Washington Monday to decide future action on wage increase demands. The meeting follows President Wilsons proclamation returning the roads to private ownership on March first. Leaders say they will press their demands before government control ends, despite the looming shift of ownership.
In Los Angeles on December 26, the link between Harry S. New, alleged murderer, and Indiana Senator New was probed. A deposition by Martha Scudder claimed the senator was Harry New’s father, while DA Woolwine challenged the proof. Attorney Charles Williams testified he advised Harry and noted discussions of paternity. Williams said Senator New previously gave Harry forty dollars for a trip to Oklahoma City.
J Stanley Brown son of a Detroit cigar magnate was shot while driving near Mount Clemens. A attacker hid behind a telephone pole and fired four bullets into his head. Robbery motive ruled out as money remained untouched. Mrs Brown, recently divorced, was detained then released. the couple had two children.
Seven men died and four were dying after a Christmas celebration where wood alcohol was consumed. A saloon keeper, Frank Rose, has been arrested for selling wood alcohol colored to resemble whiskey. Jim Wilburn returned home after months in Oklahoma and Kansas City, Missouri.

New York news reports a continuing sugar shortage despite eighty million pounds of Cuban sugar arriving last week. Grocers say they still cannot obtain sugar for retail sale, leaving consumers without relief.
New York Christmas gift from John D Rockefeller presents one hundred million dollars to the Rockefeller Foundation and General Education Board. About six hundred colleges and universities will gain through higher teacher salaries, pushing the Rockefeller total benefactions toward nearly half a billion dollars.
The Shipping Board announced that seven former German liners now in New York will be turned over to Britain as soon as arrangements are made. Washington December 26 The first meeting of the coal tribunal appointed by President Wilson will be held Monday as three members establish the basis for future sessions after January first. The commission has no power to enforce an award. Congress must. Several congressmen oppose giving control of bituminous mines to the commission. operators and miners likely will reject an unjust award.
