A local official reopens debate on a proposed ordinance to reduce saloon licensing fees. The measure seeks to lower the license amount, prompting discussion among council members and business owners about revenue impact and enforcement.
The city council voted five to one to rescind the saloon license ordinance lowering the fee from two thousand to one thousand dollars. Mayor Stockard defended the action, saying it reflects the will of the majority, while critics argued the move should be reconsidered. The meeting also appointed a sanitary officer and discussed official newspaper publication.
Roswell records note a Statehood Steering Committee meeting at the Commercial Club rooms to discuss statehood and other Washington matters. A booster meeting is scheduled for Friday night with refreshments and invites to interested business people.
The Roswell City Council repeals Ordinance No. 120 passed December 19 1907 and declares it void. The ordinance takes effect five days after publication. The fleet anchors in four columns five miles from town as the Kentucky suffers a steering gear hiccup. One sailor G E Pipes dies of meningitis aboard the Alabama and is buried as the fleet coal’s there.
On November 19, 19th century style, Van T. Manville personally appeared before a date acknowledging a deed. The document includes a signature and seal of William McSparrow and states the act was executed as his free act and deed.
L B Tannehill returns from a business trip to Amarillo. Miss Lillian McCain returns from Jacksonville to settle her grandfather estate and visits New Orleans, San Antonio, and Dallas over six weeks. Her brother Joe H McCain leads the grandfather’s plantation near Jacksonville in the Blue Ridge mountains.

Democratic National Committee today announced the date and place for the 1908 convention. Denver, Colorado, will host on July 7, 1908, with representation set by Senate and House members plus territories totaling six delegates each for Alaska DC Hawaii and Porto Rico.

Clyde Lake from Roswell Automobile Co. allegedly went to Jackson Michigan but is now found in Blackwell. the couple has moved to Jackson. A church recital is noted and a town editorial questions saloon restrictions and bonds.
Wallace M. James, formerly of Roswell and later of Memphis Tennessee, died December 22 in Asheville North Carolina where he had lived two years. He was nearly 26. He battled tuberculosis for about nine years and made repeated health efforts in Roswell, returning east each time. He worked in Roswell during his first two visits and was a nephew of Capt. J. W. James. He leaves a wife.

Large Christmas bells hang from the ceiling and bells ornament windows while potted daisies center tables and a daisy bush forms the room’s focal point. Honeysuckle entwines the pillar giving a fragrant perfume to the space.
