Santa Fe May Lose Its Only Railroad
In Pueblo Colorado on December 20 1939 a decision loomed over Santa Fe New Mexico direct rail service. The two day hearing on the Denver Rio Grande Westerns bid to abandon the Antonito to Santa Fe narrow gauge line concluded with Judge J Foster Symes taking the case under advisement and inviting briefs over the next 30 days. Railroad officials said the line lost about 30000 yearly while opponents warned abandonment would cost jobs and depress northern New Mexico land values. Estimates claim 31500 auto deaths in 1939 with 1940 expected to fall below 30000 despite higher mileage. The Automotive Safety Foundation president projected safer roads and fewer deaths as more vehicles hit the road.
