Thief Steals Trees and Apples From Franklin’s Fruit Stand

Police report a noon Friday theft at 1012 E Second St in which a suspect took 35 Christmas trees and four bushels of apples valued at 315 dollars. No other major incidents reported. deputies moved three prisoners from Chaves County jail to the state penitentiary in Santa Fe. In district court Joe Dennis was found guilty of assault with intent to kill and related charges, with a 1 to 25 year sentence. Peter Couture received a 1 to 9 year suspended sentence for rape.

Policemen Hope for Christmas Homecoming

State Policeman Bill Bullock and State Policeman Don Schultz lie in Roswell hospitals hoping to be home for Christmas if all goes well. Bullock foresees a Christmas Eve discharge after hip surgery. Schultz expects a longer stay, with family visiting and a nine year old son saving gifts for the hospital.

In Washington President Eisenhower and Secretary Dulles hailed renewed vigor and unity in the Atlantic alliance after talks in Paris with Allied ministers. UN forces opened fire near Port Said on December 15 to stop Egyptian guerrillas attacking a French Jeep. Norwegian troops in blue helmets fired on a grenade-throwing band. No casualties were reported.

Major Companies Stake 75 Locations In Area Oil Fields

Southeastern New Mexico sees 75 new oil field locations in two weeks with 37 staked last week and 3 the week before. Lea county leads with 22 locations last week and 25 prior. Eddy county reports eight independents in nine last week and 12 the week before. Chaves county sees three and one. Over 40 wildcat rigs active. 47 wells completed in two weeks, 31 prior week. Factors cited include the Suez crisis and higher state allowed output up to 42 barrels per day.

Fire Tops Oil Well Near Eunice Damages Hit $200000

Oil field workers extinguished a well fire six miles east of Jones City near the Texas line causing about 200000 in damages. Two refrac units valued at 150000 and 25000 for Eunice and Western Co. equipment were destroyed. Workers escaping injury saved some motor gear during the fracturing operation near Littman A No 3.

Roswell State Bank Plans 250000 Two Story Expansion

The Roswell State Bank will build a 250000 two story bank at the southeast corner of Second Street and Richardson Avenue. Frank Standhardt estimates construction to start in 60 to 90 days with occupancy hoped before the end of 1957. The first floor will include drive in windows and 6 square feet of space with 20 by 27 foot staff room on the second floor for public meetings after banking hours.

Roswell Jaycees join the national Best Young Farmer contest with a local Chaves County event.
