Madison Minnesota AP Poet Robert Bly refused a $5,000 government grant from the National Foundation of the Arts and the Humanities citing opposition to the Vietnam War. Bly, who runs Sixties Press in western Minnesota, said government funds could be used for a poetry magazine or a napalm canister, leaving no pride in accepting the award. He co founded American Writers Against the Vietnam War.
Speculation mounted that Greece's military rulers seek a compromise to reinstate King Constantine from exile and restore normalcy. Constantine and family shelter in the Greek Embassy in Rome while Athens reports order. Washington and London reassess ties as talks with the junta continue.
A severe winter storm battered New Mexico with heavy snow and ice. About 200 cars were stranded on U S 66 between Gallup and Grants as highways closed and drivers faced dangerous conditions.
The Senate approved a sweeping Social Security bill 62 to 14 after 22 hours of debate, sending it to President Johnson. It raises benefits by 3.6 billion and payroll taxes by 1.5 billion in 1969, with welfare and Medicaid provisions under sharp scrutiny and potential changes next year.
Snow blanketed Lincoln County with 4 to 6 inches countywide and more in higher elevations, causing two school closures in Hondo and Carrizozo while Capitan and Ruidoso held classes. Chains were advised for travel as conditions remained hazardous and skiing at Sierra Blanca reported 12 inches of new snow atop a nine inch base with excellent lower slopes. Bad weather forces postponement of the annual Roswell High School choral program titled Christmas in Song announced by choral director Joe Carroll. The event moves to Monday at 7 30 p.m. in the high school auditorium. The high school orchestra will follow with a Christmas program Tuesday at 7 30 p.m. in the RHS Little Theater.
Washington AP reports a late session dispute over foreign aid risks delaying adjournment. Conferees settled on a $1.77 billion antipoverty appropriation and a $9.3 billion two year extension of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act. Final action on the major Social Security expansion is planned to push adjournment with a Senate vote before noon.
The Roswell Coyotes Goddard Rockets and NMMI Colt teams trip to El Paso and the NMMI game against Lubbock Christian College and the Broncos were canceled due to adverse weather. Roswell athletic director Dale Somers said hopes for rescheduling remain and no arrangements were finalized at press time.
In a brief session the Roswell City Council approved a six month subsidy of 1200 dollars per month for Gold Cross Ambulance, sharing the cost with Chaves County Commission. Mayor Harris noted county and city funds support. indigent accounts will be billed to officials.
