Air Force crews aid Navajo communities after a storm leaving residents without power and seeking shelter. Emergency teams coordinate relief, distributing supplies and checking vulnerable households for safety and needs. Local agencies request continued public cooperation and updates on access routes.
Weather notes a cold spell with a clear sky after a brief storm centered in Arizona. Four inches of snow were forecast but vanished as winds cleared clouds leaving a sunlit, warm Monday possible.
Rescue teams scoured the 1,750 foot bridge site near Point Pleasant West Virginia for six hours but found no bodies. Officials suspended the search citing river current and 40 degree water. A temporary morgue was set up as authorities plan further investigation and river clearance. Eight died and 33 to 38 were missing after the Friday bridge collapse blocking a 35 mile river stretch.
Former District Court Judge William T. Scoggin, 58, died Saturday in a Las Cruces hospital after a long illness. He served on the district bench from 1948 to 1966, held roles as county assessor and district attorney, and was noted for juvenile case work. Funeral services were pending at Graham's Mortuary. Survivors include his widow Maria, a son in Washington DC, two daughters in Santa Fe and Williams AZ, two brothers, and four grandchildren.
Hundreds of Navajo Indians faced a brutal winter storm isolating communities on the reservation. Air Force fuel and ski capable helicopters prepared to airlift food blankets and medical supplies as rescue teams struggled through more than 30 inches of snow. Three deaths were reported including Crippled Boy and a mumps outbreak trapped travelers along I-40 and US 66 near Grants New Mexico.
Police conducted a land sea and air search after Harold E. Holt disappeared during a skin diving off a beach near his home south of Melbourne. A 22 hour beach search failed to locate the prime minister and authorities expanded the effort with foot patrols and a helicopter.
Gov. David F. Cargo said he will request written reports on Civil Air Patrol and State Police participation in the Corona area survivor recovery after a single engine plane crash. He noted conflicting accounts were given to news media by both agencies.
State Policeman Nick Saiz and Rio Arriba Deputy Sheriff Eulogio Salazar jointly sue Reies Lopez Tijerina Juan Valdez Baltazar Martinez and 16 others for damages in district court stemming from gunfire in the June 5 Tierra Amarilla raid. Saiz says Valdez shot him after unlawful detention and threats. Salazar says Tijerina or Martinez shot him in the face and arm amid courthouse seizure.
Chaves County Independent School Board members Friday tabled any plan to build a county high school until financing is feasible. A superintendent report said bonding capacity limits would allow only a minimal facility and program, potentially restricting student opportunities.
In Corona New Mexico five men survived a 23 hour ordeal after a Piper Cherokee 6 crashed in the Gallinas Mountains. Air Force Maj. J E Stout trekked four hours with a broken ankle to summon help. Pilot Doss Maner was killed.
A bus carrying 40 Ft. Bliss soldiers home for Christmas leave skidded on an ice and snow covered highway about 95 miles east of El Paso and overturned. Three men were killed and four others critically injured. twenty more were injured and thirteen were unharmed. Convoys rushed to the scene and a medical evacuation helicopter operated after nightfall to airlift victims.
