Mrs. Frank Young, Roswell Tuberculosis Association chair, explains how Christmas seal sales fund local efforts to curb tuberculosis. Funds aid transient indigents, provide schoolchildren with health care and dental services, and support public health nurses in Roswell during 1939.
Two ranchers Raymond Allison and Charles Ginther were kidnapped near the San Felipe ranch south of Chihuahua City by men posing as police. They were released after 10 hours as a 100 000 peso ransom was demanded but not paid. Mexican cavalry and state forces pursued the kidnappers.
German consulate secretary Walter Engelberg was found murdered in his Brooklyn home. Investigators described a vengeful, possibly personal motive with a mustached, German speaking man as a suspect. No robbery motive found. consular officials noted no political motive and handed case to New York police and German authorities.
Lea Rowland city water superintendent shows water department receipts of 408.14 for November up from 4,989.00 in November 1938. Six new water services were installed last month.
A Roswell Chamber of Commerce event at Berrendo school drew a large audience, the last before Christmas. Santa Claus talked via a separate room microphone, with Wayne Patterson voicing him. Master of Ceremonies were John Halter, Oscar Greene, and W. C. Taylor.

Roswell Advertising Club coordinates decorations with prizes for business, residences, and churches. Residential and church lights must be on by December 18, with district prizes of 10, 5, 3, and 2 dollars and a 10 dollar church prize.
Washington officials said relief problems would not be eased by expanding surplus food distribution. The surplus commodities corporation will aid states and welfare agencies, but cannot boost allocations where local funds are lacking. Akron and Cleveland may join the stamp plan. The Hereford Breeders Association tour of consigners herd inspection is postponed to December 18 19 due to a conflict with the Hereford sale in Blackwell Texas. A. D. Jones president said Eastern New Mexico breeders and others will participate. The association sale remains set for January 26th in eastern New Mexico.
Santa Fe New Mexico announces the state oil conservation commission hearing on proration for the Hobbs field. Arguments focus on gas pressure as a factor to limit migration of petroleum between leases within the field and whether the current 60 percent acreage and 40 percent bottom hole gas pressure basis should be altered. A neck and neck contest between Albuquerque and Santa Fe emerged in the New Mexico Education Association mail ballot, as about 4,000 ballots were tallied to decide the 1940 convention site and top offices. Albuquerque 1624, Santa Fe 1641. for president W. G. Donely Hobbs 1913 and Mrs. Ellen Arledge Albuquerque 1336.
San Quentin prison case draws district attorney Bagshaw to consider murder for guards after convict William Young testified seeing guard William G. Lewis hold Frank Tucker and order Richard M. Meredith to shoot. Tucker died from an abdominal gunshot wound. coroner said Tucker attacked Lewis after warnings failed.
A three o clock Sunday dedication marks the installation of the final three of seven memorial windows in the First Presbyterian Church sanctuary. Von Gerichten Studios produced the antique glass windows praised by church observers. Pastor Dr LeRoy Thompson will give a message with a special musical program featuring solos by guest singers, the Choral Society quartet and a chorus. Mrs J A Barnett will sing Come Unto Me and Vernon Robertson will perform The Ninety and Nine. The event aims to highlight the windows richness and spiritual impact.
Judge Bryan G. Johnson sitting for Judge McGhee dismissed the jury panel until January 15 after ruling the state lacked enough evidence to retry Oscar White on drunk driving. Roger Hill pled guilty to killing five sheep owned by Oscar White, with sentence deferred and Hill released on recognizance. Mistrial declared in P. H. Shine Adams drunk driving case after a deadlocked jury. retrial set. R. L. Holcomb found not guilty on one theft count but another theft charge postponed. Louie Schnoor case continued. Johnson also heard civil non jury matters. McGhee holding court at Lovington.
Santa Fe December 7 State Rep Frank J McCarthy Democrat of Chaves telegraphed his resignation as a legislator to Secretary of State Jessie Gonzales effective immediately. He gave no reason for the action and did not provide further details.
Officers today escorted Steve Wade and A C Lewis to the state penitentiary. Wade received a sentence of 20 to 30 years for rape while Lewis drew 2 to 3 years for forgery. Battery A to Albuquerque will take 4 officers and 70 enlisted men for a week of training at the state fair buildings.
In Europe’s war, a neutral Netherlands vessel was torpedoed in the English Channel with possible crew losses, while a British trawler was sunk by a mine. Britain reported other neutral ships sunk and Danish and Greek vessels lost in North Sea and Thames Estuary. Finland’s plight draws attention as Moscow says it smashed the Finnish line on the Karelian Isthmus.
Spencer Penrose, 74, builder of the Broadmoor play ground and resort in Colorado Springs, died at his home at 12:50 a.m. after a six month throat ailment. A Harvard grad, he made a fortune in mining and promoted major tourist attractions including a golf course, rodeo, polo grounds, zoo and ice rink. Survived by his widow Julie Penrose. brother Boies Penrose is noted as late.
Santa Fe New Mexico December 7 1938 State highway engineer Burton Dwyre said wage rate disputes would not delay the highway program. If no agreement on a new scale is reached the department will proceed under the old schedule while continuing projects such as the Raton Pass route Taos canyon Embudo Mescalero U S 70 surfacing and Tucumcari grade separation and overpass plans.
Laurene Nelson of Roswell New Mexico won a red ribbon at the style revue of the 18th annual National Congress of 4-H Clubs in Chicago. She competed against 38 state sewing champions with 11 earning blue ribbons.
