New York dispatch recalls 1919 and 1918 US mine sweeping feats as Britain seeks Germanys new weapon. Rear Admiral Joseph Strass led both operations that cleared North Sea mines and laid 56 000 American mines between Scotland and Norway. The Dungaree navy earned its deadly reputation before a protective device reduced losses.
Cort Marley a Roswell stockman is acquitted of 11 sheep thefts and five sheep killings on Oscar White's ranch. He faces separate cattle theft charges set for Jan 17. Defense blamed ex convict Roger Hill. Hill awaits trial in Chaves county jail. Jury verdict came after under four hours of deliberation.
Attorney J M Hervey of Roswell declared a tax on non productive mineral properties impractical without clear legislation during a New Mexico Oil and Gas Association meeting in Artesia. District attorney G L Reese Jr opined local authorities can tax such properties, but widespread valuation and feasibility issues persist due to speculative interests and complex fractional ownership. He warned it could curb leasing and development and questioned public policy supporting such taxation.
Arizona officials renewed a large scale search for Winnie Ruth Judd, the 34 year old killer who escaped the state hospital for the insane again. Rumors and tips spurred patrols through citrus groves and desert near Phoenix as authorities feared she might have taken her own life while pursued. Her husband Dr William Judd travels from Los Angeles as the search continues for the so called blonde tigress who killed Agnes Le Roi and Hedvig Samuelson in 1931 and was saved from hanging by a Florence sanity board.
G W Carr filed a suit in Roosevelt county district court seeking to halt a 25 cent special tax used to finance state capitol remodeling. The action challenges the law on six counts, arguing it authorizes $750,000 in expenditures without approval by qualified electors.
The Roswell Chamber of Commerce celebrated its 21st anniversary at a meeting attended by about 280. President Sylvester P. Johnson Jr led talks on the year’s work from air mail service to flood control and the Eastern New Mexico State Fair. Col. C. Pearson outlined air mail plans via Albuquerque Roswell Hobbs Carlsbad and El Paso, noting the need for a municipal airport. Officials including Mayor Allison touted support and possible city airport funding with expected congressional action on airport ownership.
Mrs Mason spoke to the Roswell Advertising Club on Women In Advertising. Members praised the address and applauded her claim that women do 99 1/2 percent of buying while men sell. Frank Winsett joined Clowe and Gown as a new member. Guests included Colonel Dinty Moore and the speaker. The meeting was led by Bruce Poorbaugh with plans for a softball game to be discussed later.
Evangelist J. G. Dasent, general conference and union secretary of the Negro department of the S D A, will visit Roswell from December 8 to 17. He will speak at Beulah Seventh Day Adventist Church at 106 South Michigan starting at 7:30 with prayer and song service, followed by preaching at 8:15.

New Mexico state tourist bureau director Joseph Bursey proposed a Coronado Cuarto Centennial stagecoach caravan from Raton to Santa Fe. The plan calls for 25 to 30 horse drawn vehicles driven by region old timers, with stops at Fort Union and other historic sites and town celebrations to welcome the caravan.
Albuquerque December 6 The Coronado observances move forward with Col Thomas B Catron named executive secretary of the New Mexico Coronado commission and plans approved for an $80 000 monument museum near Bernalillo. The project includes Kuauapueblo ruins a botanical garden and a gallery housing Coronado armor and Cassidy murals under WPA cooperation. Jerome Cargill will supervise pageants with a New York manager to schedule dates.
London sources report British firms arranged to supply a score of fighter planes and other war materials to Finland. Foreign Secretary Halifa x voiced sympathy for Finland and called the Russian invasion an inexcusable act of aggression.
Representative McDowell charged that a government publication and services were used to aid Paul V. McNutt's presidential campaign. He telegraphed President Roosevelt noting an article by McNutt mailed under frank was, at best, in bad taste and possibly illegal.
Santa Fe officials say the New Mexico section of the American Society of Civil Engineers will discuss appointing a committee to probe highway department practices at tonight’s Albuquerque meeting. President Thomas McClure notes authorization exists but financing and other points need discussion.
New Christmas decorations are being put up on Main Street this year by the Advertising Club. Large wreaths encircle lighted stars overhead at the 2nd and 3rd street intersections. Some light posts are transformed into giant red candles awaiting the flame. Figures of the Seven Dwarfs and jack-in-the-boxes top the corner poles. The Ad Club plans to add more decorations in coming years.
The case of P. H. Shine Adams of Dexter charged with drunk driving went to the jury at 11 this morning but a verdict had not been reached by 3 this afternoon. Holcomb faces larceny charges for oil well drilling equipment. Judge Bryan G. Johnson of Albuquerque sits for Judge McGhee who is in Lovington.
Governors Payne Ratner of Kansas Leon C Phillips of Oklahoma and John E Miles of New Mexico issued a joint statement denouncing the Cole bill to federalize oil. They pledged unalterable opposition and asked other governors to join a Washington hearing after Congress convenes. They also voiced opposition to the Venezuelan oil trade pact and planned a Muskogee conference December 15 with Arkansas Louisiana and Texas invited.
In San Antonio Texas the state case against mayor Maury Maverick for poll tax payment conspiracy could go to a district court jury tonight. Prosecution claims Maverick proposed funding union members unable to pay poll taxes and that silver half dollars were disbursed to union headquarters and members. Maverick testified he did not intend to buy poll tax receipts but to push union members to become qualified voters.
President Roosevelt met with Jesse Jones and Norman Davis to discuss non military aid to Finnish civilians amid the Russo Finnish war. No decisions were made but plans could move toward providing food and clothing through American lending agencies. Davis noted talks on relief and the Finland debt payment due December 15 was under review by Congress.
Police chief Elier's November report shows 253 charged, 78 jailed, 175 cited, with 56 fined or jailed and 18 sent to county jail. Offenses include drunk driving, speeding, theft, and many parking violations. Allied naval actions cited and Finland's 22nd independence anniversary marked as Britain and France report German submarines sunk.
