Sky laboratories test high altitude flight gear in cold rooms
In Santa Monica a sky laboratory recreates minus 104 degree conditions to study aircraft parts and human endurance at extreme altitude. Engineers and pilots wear insulated suits and oxygen systems as they test fuel, oil, controls, and bearings, aiming to improve bombers and fighters for safer, higher, faster flight beyond the tropopause.

Milestones of Science: High speed impact strengthens metal absorption
A Schenectady lab tests show metals absorb more energy when struck at high strain rates than when pulled slowly. The study aims to quantify energy absorption in metals under rapid hammering. Also noted is a study on maternal death from amniotic fluid embolism and a locust-killing microbe, plus a thundercloud electricity indicator device using a neon tube and tungsten rod.
