Roswell Marine Captain Featured on National Recruiting Poster

Roswell Marine Corps Captain Scott Smith, a Viet Nam veteran who flies White House officials in Washington, is the subject of a new Marine poster distributed nationwide. A 1956 Roswell High graduate, Smith survived a Viet Nam rescue helicopter shoot down and later held pilot duties with Marine and allied forces. He is married to Eleanore Knox of Raton. The road toll in New Mexico so far this year stands at 433, up from 347 at this date last year.

Britain vows to protect Kariba power flow from Rhodesia

Wreck Near San Patricio Fatal to Man

A one car crash near San Patricio killed Richard C. Ehlenberg and injured Ogee Thompson. Ehlenberg died at a Roswell hospital and Thompson stayed in good condition at a regional medical center. Funeral plans for Ehlenberg are pending.

Push to designate Interstate 70 gathers regional leaders

Delegations from Amarillo Clovis Portales Roswell Ruidoso Alamo Gordo Las Cruces Deming and Lordsburg and other points will attend a January 21 meeting at Chaparral in Ruidoso Downs to organize a push for an Interstate 70 designation for U S 70. Roswell officials say the route offers defense installations and a winter weather alternative to Interstate 66. The meeting follows a southeastern New Mexico Highway Seminar held at Roswell Inn two weeks earlier.

Gremlins Delay Airlifting of Cuban Refugees to the U S

Mechanical trouble and red tape delayed the first commercial airlift of Cuban refugees to the United States. At Miami International Airport 800 to 1,000 hopefuls waited as a Pan American plane, carrying 82 refugees, faced takeoff delays in Cuba and document checks in Miami. Most passengers were set to join relatives in multiple states with 63 bound for Illinois New York California Massachusetts New Jersey West Virginia Virginia and Colorado. The program aims to transfer refugees nationwide with one flight daily this week expanding to two. Sundays may be excluded.

November sets Roswell records with warm spell in 1949

The Roswell weather bureau reports November average temperature of 52.5 degrees the highest for November since 1949. Highs reached 85 on November 25 and a low of 16 on November 30. Precipitation totaled .08 inch mostly from November 7 to 10. Wind peaked at 33 mph on November 26. Fog reduced visibility on November 5 8 and 10. The coldest November Roswell ever recorded was six degrees below zero in 1906 and the warmest 87 degrees in 1896.
