Trial Of King For Murder Sept. 5

Leland King a 22 year old former soldier was arraigned in Navajo county superior court and pleaded not guilty to murdering Walter Dickson 64 near Holbrook Arizona. The trial date is set for September 5 with King arrested in Portales New Mexico after Dickson died in a hospital hours after being found roadside. King admitted riding with Dickson and saying he fought with him after a quarrel over a dice game.

Edwin Mechem Named State Bar President in New Mexico

Santa Fe August report says Judge Edwin Mechem of Las Cruces was chosen president of the State Bar Association. George L. Reese Sr. of Roswell was named first vice president Everett Grantham U S district attorney became second vice president and Herbert Gerhart was renamed secretary treasurer Mechem succeeds H A Hikey and retires from the first vice presidency as the selections were made by the bar association board of directors.

Farley Seeks Pope Pius XII Peace Effort

Postmaster General James A. Farley, after a private audience with Pope Pius XII in Castell Gwandolfo Italy, reported the pontiff anxious to promote global peace and doing all possible to ward off war. Farley noted the Pope’s health and influence, and that the Holy Father sent best wishes to President Roosevelt. Farley’s daughters Ann and Betty met the Pope who gave rosaries. Farley received a medal.

Kiker Questions Hatch Bill At Bar Convention

The New Mexico State Bar Association closed its two day annual convention with officers to be elected by mailed ballots. A. M. Fernandez and Ross L. Malone Jr. spoke as H. A. Two-Gun Bill Hart, once a top film star, had paternity accusations wiped clean by a judge calling it belated vindication. Hart, 66, won the return of a trust fund created in December 1919 for a son, Richard Leigh, whose amount grew from 7063.45 to 13625.75. Continental Airlines asked the Civil Aeronautics Authority to extend service to three southeastern New Mexico cities. A two day hearing was adjourned and the matter taken under advisement. CEO Robert Six testified that service could start 30 days after permit, with El Paso flights from Denver and direct Albuquerque plus stops at Roswell Carlsbad and Hobbs.
