Six Killed in World’s Fair Outing Bus Wreck Near South Bend

Six residents of Wakarusa Indiana and nearby areas died and ten were injured when a truck converted into a motorbus carrying a Century of Progress outing from Chicago collided with another truck near South Bend. The dead included four youths aged 14 to 17 and two adults. all except one man were from Wakarusa. The fleeing truck headed toward Chicago as deputies and police pursued it after the crash.

Baseball scores and NRA payroll survey report Roswell

Baseball results show Saint Louis and Pittsburgh games with detailed box scores. A Roswell survey by the NRA manpower division reports 291 workers and 791 employees across 291 employers, noting payroll boosts and ongoing adjustments under the reemployment agreement led by Colonel John W. Hall.

Inquest Opens On Death Of Lena Baca In Albuquerque

An Albuquerque inquest into the death of Lena Baca a 20 year old hotel employee continued into a second day with the girl's parents attorneys examining witnesses. J W Jones and his brother testified they moved from the room after leaving luggage at the hotel and did not know of the girl’s presence until a gunshot occurred. The weapon found in her hand belonged to Jones but he did not know of her presence. Funeral services for Lena Baca will be held Sunday afternoon.

State Golf Tournament Draws Roswell Crowd Next Week

The nineteenth annual New Mexico State Golf Association event will unfold at Roswell Country Club from August 23 to 27. About 125 entrants are expected with Verne Spec Stewart of Albuquerque defending his title. Favorites include Carl Jones, Edd Amonett, John Minton, and Roswell players, with potential entry by Spec Goldman. The course is in top condition and a full social and competitive program is planned, including three flights of 32 players, trophies, a low qualifying medal, and driving and approach contests. Finals Sunday.

State borrows to hold election in New Mexico

Santa Fe August 19 AP The State treasurer's office issued a 5000 dollar casual certificate of indebtedness to cover expenses for a September 19 special election. The board of finance had authorized up to that amount pending attorney general approval. Deputy Treasurer R L Ormsbee said the attorney general’s office found the issue legal and the treasurer sold the certificate to himself using permanent state trust funds.

New High for State Oil and Gas Leases in Lea County

Santa Fe August 19 AP A state land office sale set a record 27 55 per acre for a 40 acre Lea county oil and gas lease surpassing the previous high of 12 56 per acre Commissioner Frank Vesely said. The state will also collect a royalty on oil produced and the land remains under a grazing lease at three cents per acre. The bids came from sealed offerings recently called for by the land office.

Wells Plugging Contract Signed For 40 Abandoned Artesian Wells

The Pecos Valley Artesian Water Conservancy Board at a meeting signed a contract with FE B Guess of Albuquerque for plugging 40 leaky abandoned wells at 17500 dollars. Guess will start soon, beginning with district one and moving south. Clifford Smith named supervisor with half salary paid by the board and half by the State Engineer. Board to pursue 75000 for 150 wells under Public Works Act and Dr Crile to visit Santa Fe to discuss authority and applications with state advisory boards and engineers.

Hobbs Oil Men Meet in Santa Fe to Set Proration Terms

Oil operators from Hobbs field in Lea county will convene in Santa Fe to perfect their code and establish a new operation agreement for the field. State land commissioner Frank Vesely announced the plan after a Hobbs proration committee conference with Dr. E. H. Wells.

Fence removal endangers federal loans in New Mexico

Governor Arthur Seligman warns that enforcing Secretary Ickes fence removal will jeopardize or cancel federal loans to livestock men in New Mexico. Santa Fe August 19 AP Governor Arthur Seligman urged all counties to levy the required half mill for indigent funds before winter. Only four counties Grant Santa Fe Chaves and Bernalillo are meeting the law, with Dona Ana reducing and others unchanged. Washington insists the state do its utmost.

Depot Entry Last Night Nets Gum From Penny Machine

The A T and S F passenger depot was broken into last night through a west side window. Loot consisted only of chewing gum from a penny gum machine carried to the east of the tracks. no money was stolen. No trace of the thieves has been found.

State Employees Exempt From Residency Rule, AG Says
