Washington Aug 13 The treaty with Germany is rapidly nearing completion and will be ready for signatures almost any day, President Harding told senators today. The remark underscores progress on the postwar agreement.
Heavy rains across Kansas caused four inches of rainfall late yesterday collapsing oil rigs and flooding basements while small streams rose over banks in Eldorado. In Sigourney, five Gehring brothers and a hired man were jailed after police uncovered large scale bootlegging evidence including forty gallons of corn whiskey nicknamed TNT and related paraphernalia scattered across the Gehring barn.
Yesterday at Roswell Clovis defeated Roswell 5 to 4 amid controversy over Spike Murphy pitching. Sewall Jones starred for Roswell while Murphy walked off the mound in the eighth inning after a disputed play near the fence. Umpires Jones and Foreman worked a two hour ten minute game with key hits by Ruth Johnson White and Etz.
Pioneer Gordon French aged 75 of Del Rio Texas died Thursday from a stroke. The London-born journalist arrived in Texas and was remembered by about a hundred friends at his funeral held late yesterday.
Leroy Sterrett, 15 months old, died after a horse kicked him in the head and chest while tied to a load of hay at the Sterrett home north of Dexter. The death occurred Friday forenoon, about 30 minutes after the injury. Funeral and burial followed at South Park with services by Rev. Hazlett of Harmony church.
In Austin on Aug 13 the Texas House trimmed budgets as the education department section of the appropriation bill was tackled. The first assistant state superintendent’s salary dropped from 8000 to 2700 and the second assistant from 2500 to 2250. The board of controls budget was cut 29600 for two years and the state treasury 25000 for the first year. The attorney general’s budget survived the cuts. The House adopted the eleemosynary bill conference report 77 to 44 and sent it to the governor. The report urged a 268500 contingency fund for two years and kept Pope’s amendment to prevent fund shifting.
The Civil Service Commission withdraws the examination for the Roswell New Mexico postmaster position after the Post Office Department canceled its request for certification. The August 9 1921 notice from Washington details the cancellation and states the existing arrangement will prevail for the time being.
In Dallas Texas on August 13 a prowler slipped away after a woman awoke to a touch on her cheek and screamed. Her husband fired at the fleeing figure while a watchman detained a barefoot man who claimed innocence and was released. Police suspect the man was the prowler based on initial evidence.
Corsicana Texas Aug. 13 A letter found under a newspaper door bears the Klan seal and contains fifty six dollars with directions to turn it over to the local hospital for the care of a baby. This marks the first sign of Klan organization in the area.
Washington reports the July cotton consumption at 410,120 bales excluding linters, down from 525,489 a year ago per the census bureau. The notice also lists farm sale items including table grapes, jelly grapes, Elberta peaches, Crawford peaches, Bartlett pears, and 가격 per bushel for sale at De Bremond farm.

Two highwaymen robbed the Waukomis National Bank eight miles south of Enid Oklahoma at noon and escaped with three thousand dollars in cash. Posses scoured the countryside for the suspects.
Mr and Mrs Ed Younger and two children of Oklahoma City arrived in Roswell yesterday in their car. Ed Younger Jr a 4 cadet at the Institute the past year preceded the family several days. The Youngers are en route to their new home in Old Mexico and will stay at the Gilder in Roswell for a week.
Democrats of Chaves county met at the courthouse to elect delegates to the state convention in Albuquerque on August 18. D P Greiner was named chairman and Edgar I Puryear secretary. a committee selected the delegate list including S Lea, W M Atkinson, BR B Smurl, H M Dow, Mrs Emma Johnson and many others. Harmony prevailed and Democrats were confident in the forthcoming special election.
Aug 13 Kansas City report details competition to Cleaver Wood, the Dallas Cowboys’ star, to become Audrey Munson’s ideal physical mate. Paul E Kavice of Leavenworth sent a letter to United Press claiming his only bad habit is tobacco and that he served time in Leavenworth after an overseas scrape. Wood awaits Audrey’s reply.
A full page advertisement signed by Dr. Simmons imperial wizard of the Ku Klux Klan was printed in New York papers today. It delivers a lengthy defense of the organization addressed to all people of the United States calling for law order peace and justice.
In Houston Aug 13 J P ycati, president of Gulf Coast Lines, notes Mexico's rail system now rivals U S service after a decade of disruption. W K Ackley of American Foreign Banking Corp in Buenos Aires warns that most Argentine firms have little American stock left and will not order again once depleted. He says U S manufacturers must meet delivery promises with reliable service to retain South American business amid stiff competition from British, German, French and Italian rivals.
Colfax Iowa based writer James Norman Hall famed for Kitchener's Mob and High Adventure is visiting his parents after eighteen months roaming Tahiti and the Marquesas with Charles Nordhoff. He plans another trip to Rapa Iti, writes about the Faery Islands, and predicts a book next winter. He has crossed 7000 miles in the last year and will soon sail back toward the equator and the famed southern seas.
Houston, Aug 13 A new steamship line backed by a $400000 local company will operate between Boston Baltimore and Houston. The plan calls for two ships a month.
Washington Aug 13 General Leonard Wood who just completed an investigation of Philippine conditions is understood to have advised against granting independence to the islands in the immediate future.
