The Soviet Union announced the launch of its 235th cosmos satellite with radio transmitter instruments operating normally. In Gallup, the 47th Inter Tribal Ceremony opened after days of rain, drawing thousands to a downtown parade. In Miami, gunfire marred a riot zone with three killed and 18 wounded amid looting. Detailing court cases and protests followed in Santa Fe, Detroit, Cleveland, Prague, and New York Times reports on potential invasions and regional unrest.
A Baltimore & Ohio passenger train with about 100 aboard derailed on the Butler Warren county line injuring about 20 and killing Albert Wills, the car driver struck at an unmarked crossing. Wreckage stretched over a half mile four miles north of Middletown.
