ATS4 Fails To Reach Its Orbit

CAPE KENNEDY Fla AP a Atlas Centaur rocket launched ATS4 a weather satellite aimed at a stationary 22 300 mile orbit to watch hurricanes. The engine did not perform the second burn leaving the satellite in a low earth orbit losing its continuous weather and storm monitoring capability.

Eisenhower Shows Continued Improvement After Heart Attack

Washington AP reports former President Dwight D. Eisenhower, nearing the end of a critical period after Tuesday's major heart attack, is making constant improvement. Doctors at Walter Reed have stopped continuous oxygen and say he has excellent morale while enjoying a light read.

32 Killed in Airliner Crash at Charleston

A Piedmont Airlines FH227 crashed near the Mountaintop airport in Charleston West Virginia killing 32 of 37 aboard. Survivors were hospitalized in critical condition. The crash followed a foggy instrument approach with the glide slope ILS not operating.

Federal Mediator Enters Ell Dispute Between Employer and Union

A federal mediator joined Electronic Industries Inc and 63 union workers in a wage dispute over increases. The company offered five cents per hour, the union seeks ten cents. Mediation by Henry Meywes of Albuquerque followed by talks with company president Bill Underhill and Jerome Bailey of the Communications Workers of America. No action taken yet, talks to resume Monday with results anticipated early next week. Bailey challenged the $415,000 payroll figure, noting most workers earn under $2 per hour and only one craftsman earns over that. A walkout was authorized August 1 by the 63-member bargaining unit.

McGovern Enters Democratic Nomination Race

Senator George McGovern formally declared his bid for the Democratic presidential nomination in the Senate Caucus Room. He urged a Vietnam war end and a platform on peace while hedging on Kennedy endorsement, pledging a foreign policy of restraint and a plan to scale down the military.
