State Police asked Darryl E. Samples to remove campaign stickers placed on south county stop signs. Samples urged residents to remove stickers if noticed, saying supporters acted in error. New Mexico Governor David Cargo switched his bloc at the Republican National Convention from Rockefeller to Nixon claiming it protects his integrity. New Mexico cast eight votes for Nixon on the first roll call, five for Reagan and one for Rockefeller before uniting behind Nixon as the nomination appeared wrapped up.
Fire bombs bottles and rocks fly as rioting erupts in a predominantly Negro district of northwest Miami. Police reinforce, patrols warn white drivers off streets after cars set afire stores looted and 100 Negroes arrested. Two men shot, both in good condition.

Continal American Royalty Co. Carco finalizes acquisition of U S Borax and Chemical Corp properties in Carlsbad. About 800 employees were affected last year with 200 more expected to be hired. Production capacity historically 800000 to 900000 tons yearly. Carco plans to operate as U S Potash and Chemical Co. and controls oil gas sulfur rights and vast mineral lands.
Thirty peace justices gathered in Tucumcari for the last meeting of the New Mexico Justice of the Peace Association. The peace justice system will end at year’s end and be replaced by a magistrate court system.
