Santa Fe Aug 5 AP Gov Clyde Tingley says hundreds of rural schools will be under construction in the next month or two after his Washington trip. WPA to draft plans and start a model school in the Santa Fe region within 15 to 20 days. Rosenwald fund sends model school blueprints to guide specs.
Washington August 5 AP The administration tax bill passed the House 282 to 95 and moves to the Senate with expectant debate. Finance chairman Harrison aims to finish hearings this week and report soon. Changes are anticipated as liberals seek steeper taxes and broader relief for smaller brackets.
Secretary of Agriculture Henry A. Wallace told Eastern New Mexico farmers in Clovis that a balance among agriculture labor and industry is needed to restore stability. He criticized certain industries for not supporting the recovery act and defended the AAA while warning against government overreach and corporate power.
Clarence Edwards, 34, was arrested in Missouri near Smithville for the slaying of Dr. Paul Rodgers, 35, after authorities say Edwards admitted stomping him during a drunken scuffle. Rodgers' body was found along a Missouri river bottom. Edwards had recently been released from a state hospital for the insane.
Santa Monica columnist Wue Rogers writes from a fence seat about the ongoing world championship cowboy contest. He notes many competitors hail from Oklahoma and likens rodeo to baseball for unpredictability. He laments mood and focuses on the sport while avoiding editorializing.
General rains spread over the state for two to three days, with Southeastern New Mexico receiving the heaviest fall. Roswell saw a nine oclock Saturday night shower, boosting Friday and Saturday totals to 57 inch. Mountain districts west of town, Vaughn and Ramon north, reported torrential rain, rocks on highways, and forecasts call for unsettled weather with more showers tonight and Tuesday. Picacho also reported a heavy rain.
Joliet Ill Aug 5 AP four guards were discharged after a six hour probe into Henry Midget Fernekes escape from the state prison dressed as a visitor. Fernekes blamed for multiple murders robberies and bank crimes remains at large with a $1 000 bounty set by Governor Horner. Damage reports from storms added to statewide concerns with roads and bridges along routes including Lamy to Albuquerque Santa Fe and Taos said to have soft shoulders and washouts.
Albuquerque reports investigators found water in gasoline drawn from underground tanks at Transcontinental & Western Airport. The ill fated Douglas transport, forced to a pancake landing 20 miles east of Albuquerque, had engines crippled. Ten passengers escaped uninjured and two pilots were slightly cut. Kinney led the air bureau inquiry with inspectors from Texas and Kansas City. Findings to be announced in Albuquerque or referred to Washington if not definite.
Berlin reports that Dr. Paul Joseph Goebbels issued a blunt pledge to strike into the dust all state enemies as the Nazi drive tightens on the Stahlhelm and other groups. He warned that no organization besides the Nazi party may own political life and urged forceful action against saboteurs and opponents including Jews and political Catholics. Leaders of the Stahlhelm expressed grave concern as embargoes and resignations spread amid intensified anti semitic campaigns. The propagandist also targeted religious press and political Catholicism while urging strict enforcement against non Nazi religious organs. A 1936 Olympic appeal from Theodore Lewald urged youth to witness German unity of national pride and fair play under Hitler.

President Roosevelt announced a three million dollar erosion control allotment to curb wind and water damage in the Rocky Mountain region. New Mexico received the largest share among the four states, with 2,017,563 dollars for a new Union county project and continued work on projects in McKinley San Juan Rio Arriba Taos Santa Fe Sandoval Socorro Grant and Catron counties.
In Santa Fe a 10-year-old boy died after allegedly contacting improperly insulated high tension wires in Roswell. Melvin Spiva, administrator of Carl Spiva's estate, sues Southwestern Public Service Co. and the City of Roswell for $15,000, alleging negligence. The boy climbed a tree to view a bird nest when electrocuted on July 21.
Baseball results show Brooklyn 4 New York 5 in a 10 inning road loss for Brooklyn. Chicago and Cincinnati games are listed as notes with mixed innings and outs, while Boston routed Philadelphia 13 to 9. Batteries are named for each matchup.

Walter Gaston filed assault with deadly weapon charges against L. S. Gay and Gay answered with a counter charge. Both charges were discharged by L. L. Johnson J. P. after a preliminary hearing this morning.
President Roosevelt nominated Wisdom E. Gilbrey to be postmaster at Fort Bayard New Mexico as of August 5. AP reported the nomination from Washington.
Pittsburgh, Aug 5 AP Former Senator David A Reed said he would appear on only one more ballot as a delegate-at-large to the 1936 Republican national convention. He declared he is not seeking further public office but will campaign vigorously for a strong Republican who has a clear record on major issues. He urged speeches to press the party on the current trend and warned that the New Deal mortgaged the welfare of children.
The state board of bar commissioners held a session in Santa Fe on August 5 providing examinations for applicants seeking admission to the State Bar.
