The Eastern New Mexico Area Council Jamboree Troop 3, 31 boys and four leaders, will hold a three day practice camp here ahead of the National Boy Scout Jamboree in Washington DC August 21 to 30. P V Thorson reports the unit is among nearly 1000 from across the nation.
Dr. Robert Millikan leads two expeditions to Pike's Peak and Fort Sam Houston to study cosmic rays. The Pike's Peak team will photograph particle tracks with a cloud chamber and other equipment while Fort Sam Houston aims to launch high altitude photometric instruments. Carl D. Anderson heads the Pike's Peak effort with Seth H. Nedermeyer assisting.
Chicago reports 150 plus deaths from extreme heat across fourteen midwestern states amid floods and storms. Severe conditions bring lightning fires and city cell floods at Englewood station while showers reduce temperatures in many regions. Kansas City tops with 104, others range in the 90s across New York Philadelphia Raleigh Abilene Jacksonville Indianapolis Davenport Oklahoma City Phoenix and more.
Ethiopia accepts the League plan as Geneva hosts council sessions with Anthony Eden likely to speak. Ethiopia’s delegate Jeze voiced disappointment over delays while Haile Selassie signals readiness for renewed arbitration. A London Daily Mail attack on the League calls for Britain to quit. A crash near Albuquerque injures crew and passengers aboard a TWA Douglas, with ten aboard, while Wallace to speak in Amarillo and a New Mexico Mines project gets 93 thousand dollars in federal aid.

Washington reports the House, without a formal vote, disagreed with President Roosevelt and allowed corporations to make tax free gifts to charities as the $270 million tax bill moved toward final passage. An amendment would permit deductions up to 5 percent of net taxable income for charitable contributions, prompting debate about White House influence. The House also approved higher surtaxes on individuals earning over $50,000.
In Clovis New Mexico two youths attempted to abduct a man at the Santa Fe rail yard. Gay W Mc Reynolds 22 wrested a gun from a kidnapper shot the attacker in the leg, and both suspects Crawford Stillman 18 and Gordon Martin 16 were captured by officers within minutes. The trio had earlier robbed a second hand store with Marvin Taylor 15 arrested. Loot from the store was found on Stillman and Taylor. Taylor held a suitcase of stolen goods. McReynolds brother of F M McReynolds of Belen NM heads railway workers grievance committee.
Soviet Polar plane aborts nonstop San Francisco run due to oil leakage. Crew reports wing-tank oil loss while over Barents Sea near the North Pole and heads toward Leningrad after permission to return. A special commission will examine the craft on landing as the crew faces a hazardous return route.
AP reports Col Horatio Hackett warns cities must speed their PWA applications to the state director to avoid being left out as allocations are decided. Hackett and PWA officials toured major cities, meeting with Edward Oakley and local leaders before heading to Phoenix.
Both plugging rigs of the Pecos Valley Artesian Conservancy District will be put in operation early next week with one used to plug artesian wells in the north end of the basin around Roswell and the other in the south end. The board met to attend to routine business and discuss general conservancy matters.
City reports lower than expected flood damage after torrential rains across Las Vegas and surrounding areas. In 24 hours Las Vegas received 2.27 inches, with the Estancia valley storm washing out a small Santa Fe railroad bridge. local Weather Bureau measures 1.08 inches by 6 a.m.
The Republican county central committee meeting set for this afternoon was postponed to two o'clock next Saturday in the district court room at the court house.
Lordsburg New Mexico August 3 AP part of the landing gear of the new tailless plane was wrecked today when on the takeoff the shin ran off the field into a small ditch.
Mary Pickford arrives in Chicago with rose bouquet and smile, declines to name sender. She travels with Marion Hollins and secretary Mrs. Elizabeth Lewis to plan a new producing company, then heads toward the west by plane. She denies romance with Charles Buddy Rogers but expresses curiosity about his whereabouts.
Postage Due and Parade Girl finished first and third in the United States Hotel Stakes at Saratoga. Gallac ran second ahead of Red Rain who did not place. The field consisted of 14 two year olds running in silks of Alfred Gwynne Vanderbilt and owners C. V. Whitney and Mrs. Payne Whitney.
Lea Rowland WPD director for New Mexico said no serious relief problems expected as no general August allotment was made while officials determine the number of WPD projects.
