Hull Will Not Resign On Arrival From London

Secretary of State Cordell Hull returned from London and told reporters in New York that he has no intention of resigning now or ever. He defended the world monetary and economic conference as still alive and virile, and compared pessimistic forecasts to a man who asks if he has quit beating his wife. Hull stated the conference is only beginning and declined speculation on its success. Representative S. D. McReynolds accompanied Hull and discussed the affair in Hyde Park and aboard the President Harding.

Hannett Presses Twenty Mill Tax Limitation in New Mexico

Portales August 5 Former Governor A T Hannett speaking at a Farm Holiday Association picnic in Roosevelt County urged support for a twenty mill property tax limit. He warned opponents backed SB 144 and praised referendums that protected homes from sale, claiming the amendment would raise real estate values and ease tax burdens on homeowners and farmers.

Find Jobs in Albuquerque Under National Recovery Act

About 100 men and women in Albuquerque have found work under the national recovery act survey. Merchants say purchasing power has risen by at least 5000 dollars monthly due to higher wages. The unemployed are expected to be absorbed back into industry in two weeks. NRA headquarters will open Monday as a drive to gain support for the President's program.

Bussy and McNutt Tie for Medalist at Ruidoso Golf

In Ruidoso New Mexico Clinton Bussy of Lubbock and Blaine McNutt of El Paso tied for medalist honors in the second annual invitation golf tournament. scores rose due to rain soaked course with several players firing as high as 85. Sixty four golfers from the southwest are entered, with flights expanded to 32 and finals expected Monday.

New Mexico Legion Elects Gen Wood as Commander

Brig. Gen. Osborne C. Wood adjutant general of the New Mexico national guard was elected New Mexico department commander of the American Legion at the close of the department's fifteenth annual convention in Tucumcari Las Vegas was chosen as the 1934 convention city Maj Herman G. Baca former state commander of Belen was elected to another post.

B F Smith died early today at his home here amid charges of gassing related to the New York Stock Exchange. The report continues on page eight.

Roswell resident Benjamin F. Smith dies at 71

Benjamin F. Smith, 71, died at 2 55 this morning at his home 107 South Missouri Avenue after a year of illness and two weeks of serious sickness. Born in London Pennsylvania he moved to Roswell in 1900 with his wife and six children and remained a active community figure as a bookstore partner, sheep businessman and paint contractor. He is survived by his widow and six children including Chester in Glendale and others in Santa Fe Roswell and Roswell natives Donald and Hazel.

Wightman Cup action sees Palfrey boost U S lead at Forest Hills

Bandit Layman Captured Near Albuquerque in Escape

A 25 year old paroled New Mexico convict Jack Leyman was captured four miles north of Albuquerque hiding in a luggage compartment of a car driven by A. N. Gragg. He faces first degree murder charges in Torrance county for the July 28 deputy sheriff wounding at Mountainair. Layman and Gragg were taken into custody and Layman surrendered after gunfire and tear gas.
