Flood hits Denver as Castlewood Dam collapses

Flooding from the Castlewood Dam failure sent floodwater 35 miles toward Denver. Two dead and five missing as thousands work to rebuild. bridges and infrastructure damaged with losses estimated near a million dollars. Rescue crews mobilized, including 3000 unemployed drafted for pumps, brooms, and shovels.

CHAVES COUNTY TO SEEK FEEDER ROAD IMPROVEMENTS

At a special meeting the Chaves County commissioners withdrew earlier highway recommendations and proposed a new program funded entirely by federal aid. Projects total 78 250 dollars including grading drainage and paving near Lake Arthur, Pecos river bridges on S R 1 Hagerman to Lovington and on road from Dexter east, and rebuilds on Kenna Olive and Roswell routes with bridges. Representatives from Dexter Hagerman and Roswell Chamber of Commerce approved the plan.

Rainy Roswell Triples Yearly Rain Total

A late yesterday shower brought Roswell 0.33 inch, lifting the annual total to 3.00 inches with a statewide spread of rain across eastern New Mexico and parts of Texas Colorado and Wyoming. Roads stayed passable though some areas were muddy. Clovis reported no rain.

Malone Leaves for State Game Commission Meeting

R L Malone a member of the State Game and Fish Commission left this morning to attend a meeting of the commission in the state capital tomorrow He is accompanied by J Stockley Ligon a game expert from Carlsbad Malone said he would probably not return before Tuesday or Wednesday of next week.

N R A Goes Over 100 Percent in Artesia

Artesia becomes the first eastern New Mexico town with a complete N R A code. Hardware grocery and dry goods firms signed the agreement on Thursday and garages and filling stations joined on Tuesday, showing full cooperation on short notice.

Gandhi freed then jailed again in Poona

Mahatma Gandhi was briefly released then rearrested in Poona India on August 4 with AP reporting he refused to stay in Poona and would not desist from his activities resulting in a one year sentence in jail and ongoing movement for independence.

New Board of Directors at 1st Nat Bank Artesia

A new board of directors for the First National Bank of Artesia was appointed after the former board resigned at two meetings on July 28 and 29. The new board includes T. H. Flint Tom Heflin J. H. Felix Arias Dies Suddenly In Roswell Home

Felix Arias aged 0 died suddenly after illness at his Roswell home on Mulberry Street. He had lived in Roswell six years, previously from Las Cruces, and worked on local ranches. Giants Head to Amarillo for Realfratih Tournament

The Roswell Giants left at 1 30 this afternoon for Amarillo to play in the News Globe tournament beginning tomorrow. Roswell businessmen contributed about 125 dollars to cover trip expenses. Before leaving, Farmer the coach said the Giants stood a good chance to win the tournament.
