Three Indicted After Probe of Duke City Bank

Bernalillo county grand jury returned six indictments against three individuals in Albuquerque after two weeks of investigation into the First Savings Bank and Trust Company. Warrants not yet served. The panel also issued a critical report on the bank's operations.

Mother says Layman did not kill deputy in chase

Lulu Layman, mother of fugitive Jack Layman, told reporters in Albuquerque that she believes her son is innocent of the fatal wound to a Torrance County deputy sheriff. She had returned from Mountainair to aid the search and prevent further bloodshed as officers continued the manhunt.

Banks Join NRA Movement As Wage Codes Go In

Washington August 2 AP Fourteen thousand banks allied with the American Bankers Association joined the industrial recovery program under a revised reemployment plan. The move comes as Johnson pushes broader codes for industries and a nationwide public support campaign. Hearings were set on several codes including cotton garments, shirt industry, cast iron soil pipe and hosiery. Johnson plans talks in Harrisburg to press recovery and coal code matters amid labor tensions.

Atwood Accepts Public Works Board Nomination

Col J D Atwood of Roswell accepts the president's nomination to the public works board. The White House announced him as the first of three New Mexico appointees with Henry G Coors of Albuquerque and Felipe Sanchez y Baca of Tucumcari named. Sanchez declined.
