California Storm Toll 20 Lives and Flooded State

Ten railway workers killed in a Sacramento to Roseville collision blamed on the California storm that also sent floodwaters over the state. A worker was fatally injured. three others survived with minor injuries as a rail car collided with a gravel train amid high water and debris. The disaster follows widespread damage from the nor east storm and heavy rains across the region.

Great Southwestern Music Festival rehearsals begin

Rehearsals for the Great Southwestern Music Festival kick off tonight in Roswell with programs through Wednesday to Friday. Students from several Southwestern states will perform under renowned directors Joseph E. Maddy and T. P. Giddings, with venues in Junior High School Auditorium and various churches.

Preliminary murder hearings set for Gallup riot defendants

In Santa Fe Judge M A Otero Jr rules a preliminary hearing for 54 people charged with murder in the first degree from last Thursday's Gallup riot will be held here Thursday or Friday. Defendants include 32 men and one woman in state penitentiary, nine men in Gallup jail, four men and one woman in Gallup hospital, and seven women at liberty.

Escaped Missouri killer nabbed in Roswell

Sheriff Perry Bean and Deputy Lacey Shortridge arrested Dink Lucas who used the alias C. D. Thomas in Dexter for about a year. Missouri authorities seek him for escaping the state penitentiary while serving a 99 year murder sentence. Identified by Chaves County via fingerprints. He was arrested on a misdemeanor charge last week and confirmed this morning. Four years ago Lucas lived near Ramon New Mexico and ex governor Seligman denied extradition.

Roswell man John Riddle dies at 29

John Ralph Riddle, a Roswell resident for six years, died at 11 a.m. at St Mary’s Hospital after illness since February. He was married with a son, Billy Ralph, and was well liked in the community. Funeral arrangements are pending with Schuler's Funeral Home.

New Ordinance Enforced On City Streets

Chief of police Frank Young pledges strict enforcement of ordinance 537 from last city council meeting. It prohibits parking trucks over 18 feet on Main Walnut Fifth First Richardson Second East West limits and sections of Third Fourth Fifth streets except 15 minute loading. Loading of goods allowed only in specified blocks with sidewalk loading banned. penalties include fines from 10 to 200 dollars or 3 to 30 days in jail.

New Storm Dust Cloud Sweeping West Today

A gigantic mild whirlwind 1,000 square miles wide swept a new dust cloud from central Wyoming to the Texas Panhandle, obscuring sun and forcing headlights as it showered Colorado Wyoming and New Mexico with fine silt. Rain followed over eastern Colorado and other storms produced more dust clouds with forecasts of snow or showers tonight.

Rain Brings Rheumatism to Governor Tingley

Santa Fe April 3 Governor Clyde Tingley said last night’s rain caused an attack of rheumatism yet he would endure multiple episodes if more rain would continue. He quipped that while relief talk circulates, several more good rains would be the greatest relief the state could get.
