Unique hay tower preserves alfalfa for western Canada
En-Zaen Jan of Agriculture Canada’s Melfort station, adapted from a German design, built a circular hay tower in 1971. The 7.6 meter diameter tower stores about 75 tonnes, dries hay to 14 percent moisture in two weeks, and uses a central fan to blow air through the hay. Additional costs rise with diameter. a 10 meter version could hold 140 tonnes. The system aids dairy and cow calf producers, prevents freezing in cold climates, and costs about five dollars per tonne to load, unload, and dry.
