Parliament Hill Budget Sparks Debate on Debt and Jobs
A report from Parliament Hill analyzes Mr. Lalonde’s April budget, warning that the federal deficit will rise over four years with net debt reaching about $232 billion by 1986, equating to roughly $35,000 per four-member family. It questions the adequacy of 80,000 new jobs amid 1.5 million unemployed and 500,000 discouraged workers, urging investment in high tech and productivity to restore competitiveness. It contrasts Canada’s strong resources and skilled workforce with weak productivity trends and low R D commitment, urging a shift in attitude to prevent further debt growth. It recalls historical local telephone growth and reflects on changing times since the era of rapid expansion.
