Thompson workers honor fallen at April plaque ceremony
Manitoba Local 6166 United Steelworkers unveiled a memorial plaque on April 28 in Thompson to recognize workers who died on the job. Union president Blake McGrath said the community must remember these individuals, noting about 75 deaths in the Thompson area since the late 1950s amid a 30 year community history. RCMP and the fire commissioner's office say arson is the likely cause of a $1 million blaze destroying Wiens Furniture Village and Hanover Bearing and Auto Supply in Niverville. The fire started outside among stored boxes and remains under investigation. Plans to rebuild are underway for Wiens Furniture Village in a 15,000 sq ft glass-front building at the old site. owner Jack Wiens noted annual sales around $750,000 and rural draw from Winkler and Kenora. Hanover Bearing and Auto Supply owner Jack Worms is unsure about rebuilding.
