Manitoba Anglers Face Record Year for Master Angler Awards
About 1,500 Manitoba anglers qualified for Master Angler Awards, setting trophy fish records across 20 species. Robert Cohen of Pittsburgh shattered a brook trout record from 1959 with a colossal 9 14 pound Lake Gods River catch, while M Popowich of Winnipeg claimed the whitefish title at 8 5. Jon Pogorzelec of Winnipeg set a carp mark at 28% pounds from Lake Winnipeg on June 4. Neil Buchanan and Gerard Buchanan, both of Winnipeg, surpassed earlier Barrier Bay carp records with 4 9 and 5 8 pound monsters within days of each other. Other notable catches included a 43 pound lake trout from God's Lake by Alexander MacIntosh of Toronto, a 32 4 pound northern pike from Fishing Lake by John Mihalenko of Ohio, and a 13 1 pound walleye from the Winnipeg River by Harold Pommer of River Hills. The year also featured top perch weights and large rainbow and silver bass, culminating in a 24 74 ounce silver bass from the Whitemud River by Sam Mulder of Portage la Prairie.

Winter anglers flock to the North Country with Evergreen Lodge on Clearwater Lake run by Bob Mushrush offering ice houses, open holes, firewood and gear for six dollars per man daily plus one fifty for rental rods and reels. A 38 pound lake trout lure is noted. The Delta Marsh hosts a second trapping techniques course sponsored by the University of Manitoba. A new winter road from Ilford to Oxford House and Gods Lake is under contract by MEKESI Company Ltd for construction and maintenance.
