Rossburn Junior High Girls Win Russell Volleyball Tourney

Rossburn Junior High Girls Volleyball team captured the Division Tournament at Russell on Saturday January 20 defeating Elphinstone Inglis Angusville and Russell while Inglis Grade 9 team won non counting match. Rossburn boys team finished second after defeating Angusville Elphinstone Inglis and splitting with Russell in a decision for Major Pratt School.

Foxwarren Tops Rossburn 8 6 In North Central Hockey League

Foxwarren defeated Rossburn 8 6 in an exciting North Central Hockey League game at Rossburn on Thursday Jan 18. Foxwarren led 5 2 after the first period, stretched to 6 2, then Rossburn rallied to tie 6 6 in the third before Foxwarren scored twice late. The crowd of over 200 watched a fast skater contest with seven Foxwarren goals credited to players including Lindsay Pawluk Pizzey Deeley and Butler and Rossburn counters by Martin Beaton Huston Pierson and Lamabe.

Rossburn Hornets Triumph Over Angusville Flyers at Home

Rossburn Hornets beat the visiting Angusville Flyers 10 to 4 on Saturday night in front of about 400 fans. The win advances Rossburn in its push for a fourth playoff berth in the Western Division of the NCHSL, after taking a 1-0 lead in the first period and extending it to 6-4 by the end of the middle frame.

Man in Nature Exhibit at Rossburn School

Manitobans learn about the Winnipeg Art Gallery Extension Service through a series of exhibitions. The Rossburn Elementary display runs January 22 to February uh featuring 12 reproductions by Constable Monet Renoir and Van Gogh as the second of four shows for local viewing.

Propane Truck Hit by Train at Rossburn Crossing

A Genie Propane Ltd. truck driven by Garth Bartram of Shoal Lake collided with a CNR mixed freight train at the Victoria Ave West crossing beside the old Co op Store in Rossburn around 9 45 a m Friday January 19. No injuries were reported though the vehicle sustained over 1000 in damage after being struck on the rear corner and swung toward the tracks. The truck had just refueled at the Rossburn Curling Rink and failed to notice the northbound train as it traveled east on Victoria Avenue.

Russell-Roblin 4H Bonspiel results and notes

Ten Rossburn 4H girls competed in a two day curling bonspiel in Russell. There were 34 rinks and two events. In the first event Brenda Baubie’s rink won second prize with Cathy Koleski and Cheryl Michalchuk. Bonnie Kostesky’s rink took fourth. In the second event Cheryl Hryciuk’s rink won third prize while Frances Antonin’s rink earned fifth. Irene Bonchuk’s rink with Kathy Michalchuk Theresa and Angel Goletz ended without a prize. All reported enjoying the fun with neighboring 4H members.

Rossburn Junior High Raffle Draw Yields Profit

At a hockey game last Saturday Rossburn Junior High raffled a Speed Queen washer. Winner is Mrs Nick Chopp. The school thanks the public for support. Net profit 256 dollars 75 cents including a 5 dollar donation from Mrs Chopp.

Speedy recovery noted for Mr Bill Lazaruk in Winnipeg

Oakburn News reports Mr Bill Lazaruk underwent surgery and is a patient at St Boniface Hospital. Mr and Mrs Peter Ewanyshyn with Mrs Bill Lazaruk spent the weekend in Winnipeg. Mr and Mrs Mike Peleshok, Mr and Mrs Peter Lamb and Mrs Kowal left for holidays to Hawaii. Mr and Mrs Mike Beck departed for a holiday to Miami.

Pelly Trail School Division Meeting in Russell

The Pelly Trail School Division Board met January 4 1973 in Russell. They accepted Rex Williams resignation as Major Pratt principal and appointed Wayne Johnston and Ed Kilimnik as acting principals for the year. They approved $200 for the science fair in Oakburn and transport for contestants. Wayne Hollier’s Ottawa Montreal Quebec trip for Grade 11 history students was approved pending a grant.

The fourth annual Science Fair will be held in Rossburn Elementary auditorium on Friday January 26. Public viewing runs from 2 to 5 pm and 7 to 9 pm.

An extraordinarily mild weather pattern continues with 43 degrees taken Wednesday afternoon, the warmest January reading officially recorded here. The previous record was 41 degrees on January 16, 1961.
