On Ukrainian New Year Eve Rossburn revives the Malanka legend with merriment and revelry. Vasyl the ploughman rescues Malanka from underground as masqueraders mingle with spectators. The event promises health prosperity and a warm spring in the coming year through entertainment and public dancing.
The Rossburn Village Council, presided by Mayor Louis Kurchaba, held a December meeting with full attendance. By-Laws 654 and 656 received second reading or passage, while By-Law 655 for tax cancellation moved to the Minister for approval. Ice rental and skating fees for 1983 84 were set, with payments due by December 12.
Bruce McLaughlin was sworn in as councillor for Ward 7 of the L G D of Park at the December meeting. Ward 7 includes Onanole. A Variation Board Hearing approved reducing site width from 75 feet to 12 feet to retain a driveway when Lot 4, Block 2, Plan 7062 is subdivided. Council added appointments to various Boards and Committees including Randy Pro.
The Pelly Trail School Division held a December 14 ward 9 by election in Elphinstone after October 26 saw no candidates. Angela Nakonechny won with 70 votes, two ahead of Walter Gregorash in a low turnout under 27 percent.
