Manitoba Attorney General Roland Penner announced a three month grace period for the new seat belt child restraint and motorcycle helmet law starting April 1 1984 after it comes into force January 1 1984. Police may stop motorists but will not issue fines during public education period. charges begin April 1. Call 944 8195 for inquiries.
A special meeting of the RM of Rossburn was held December 22 with Reeve John Mitchell and council. Minutes read from December 12 and November financial statements approved. By law 1124 amended for business assessment and specified property. By law 1127 for grants of money passed. Histories Club grant request to Department of Cultural Affairs favored. Plan to buy a new 1984 CAT 140G motor grader for 74200 and trade in the 1979 model, subject to approvals. Provincial 8000 grant received for curling, golf, track, rodeo grounds, beach and pier works. Nine municipal boundary signs to be purchased for 25 each. Accounts paid total 45633.97. Powell Equipment rep Boyd Craig discussed CAT 140G purchase.
Ottawa MP Charlie Mayer, opposition agriculture spokesman, warns a 5 percent rate hike raises borrowing costs for Farm Credit Corporation borrowers to 16 percent. He calls for concern over farming viability as the sector absorbs higher financing charges.
The Ukrainian National Home of Oakburn Manitoba celebrated its 50th anniversary on November 20 1983 with a prayer service at St Volodymyr Ukrainian Orthodox Church led by Rev Michael Skrumeda then a reception at the hall. The event featured a display of books costumes and records, diplomas of recognition and speeches by Dr P Kondra and Tony Slon. Donations from many members and friends were announced and the gathering concluded with songs and thanks from officers including Tony Slon vice president Ukrainian National Home.
