Northwest Conference Rivalries Shape Local High School Sports
In the late 1930s and 1940s shifting enrollments pushed smaller schools like Antioch Palatine and Bensonville to drop football or join new leagues. The Northeast Conference formed in 1938 with Arlington Heights Crystal Lake Woodstock and others, then evolved into the North Suburban. Notable standouts include Palatine’s run of basketball and track titles from 1939-40 to 1942-43 and Ela’s 1943-47 cage championships. Coaches Wesner Warfield Lehmann and others led multiple league titles across basketball baseball and track.

Northwest Conference solidifies as all Lake County league
By the mid-1950s suburban growth spurred new alignments. The Northwest added Lake Forest Warren and Round Lake while Bensen ville Glenbrook and Palatine exited in 1957, leaving an all Lake County loop of 300 to 600 enrollment. Mel Eide says the conference never truly disbanded as a majority remained to keep its traditions alive.
