Five decades ago readers planned to travel to Fort Dodge to see President Taft but heavy rain forced a change of plans. Steam cars, no rain gear, and a large turnout in Gilmore City contrasted with fewer crowds at the Fort as about fifty tickets were sold by the M. and St. L. Railroad.
Phil Kelts painted all buildings at the J. W. Heald place. Emmet Meech completed a large chicken house for his East Rolfe suburb. Jas Howe and family traveled to a farm north of Rolfe for next year’s fall plowing with seven horses. A. Finn and wife moved to Gilmore City to run a horse business after selling their barn to Johnson and Abbotts. Otis Cook joined Marcum's hardware, replacing Curtis Delle. Mrs. George Mick and children visited Pocahontas Friday.
Mrs Ed Zeman expresses gratitude for a good neighbor deed while Leonard Lanus and Roy Lanus with Gene Madsen hauled corn to town and others assisted. Trinity Lutheran church members painted the Rutland church and parsonage with Hum boldt Trinity helping. Social calls span Gilmore City to Greene, Ostosen to Fort Dodge with visits, meals, and birthday celebrations.
The Rolfe Chapter FFA met with 22 members on September 3 to decide if Greenhands could wear jackets. After a recessed session the next day, the group ruled they may wear them. Seventeen boys rode a school bus to Spencer for the Fair.
Brian Ives reports on a judging team placing 10th of 58 with Larry Pullen, Larry Burns, Lar ry Dornath and Loren Tiernan. The exhibit won a red ribbon and the demonstration team of Duane Seward and Raymond Heald won a white ribbon.
Pilot Creek Chapter FFA officers attended a leadership school at West Bend on September 19. Members Larry Burns Joel Ives Brian Ives and Jack Hughes participated in office specific group meetings and learned practices from other chapters. A bottle gas stove explosion critically burned Mr and Mrs Chas Koehler of New Hampton.
Deane Gunderson withdrew from Pocahontas County Farm Bureau resolutions committee on September 21 after becoming campaign manager for Gov. Leo Hoegh. He requested a leave of absence from the county board where he had served as treasurer for 18 months and said he is not up for reelection. John Milton used 8,000 words in Paradise Lost.
