Ground Observers Key Link In Air Defense
Air force officials in Des Moines urge a ground observer corps to supplement radar. Major General George R. Acheson says radar is costly and line of sight limited, while ground observers enhance detection of low flying aircraft. Citizens 18+ with good sight can volunteer via the State Office of Civil Defense. Training teams will visit Iowa within 60 days.
