Kindergarten students return with holiday excitement and energy. They decorate for Christmas and sing carols while advancing in reading groups and phonics work. Absences include Bruce and Johnny. Mrs Mortensen covered Monday and Tuesday. First and Second grades highlight Christmas art with painted matchbox sleighs and window decorations.
The class celebrates Christmas with special spelling effort and 100 percent boards. Visitors Mrs Schuita and Mrs Gunderson joined. Poetry, reading groups named the Fairies and Dancers, Cupids, Rudolphs. They practice numbers, writing letters to Santa, and a gift exchange drawing among third graders.
The week covers day and night explanations, healthful foods for growth, and the importance of hydration. Students completed the geography unit Simsba, a Congo boy, with a test. The Yankees are preparing rhyme booklets linked to Story Land Here and Now.
The Rosses began a new reading unit Storyland of Here and Now and find the stories entertaining. In English we studied the correct use of took taken went gone ran and run. In science we learned about the nine known planets. On Monday we enjoyed pantomimes of various things.
In a warm Congo themed classroom the fifth graders embraced Christmas spirit during a Fairy Tale unit. Students drafted short stories and spelled flawlessly. Ten students earned perfect spelling papers including Denny Lend ley and Mary Jean Collins. Alan Mehaffey celebrated his birthday on November 27 with well wishes from the class.
The advanced typing course will start a unit on tabulated material this week, requiring students to judge proper placement on paper. They recently finished a section on centering material both horizontally and vertically, and will move to simple business letters. The shorthand class will begin a unit on joined and disjoined word endings after a unit on omitting letters.
Des Moines Township Homemaking I students plan a breakfast menu with fruit plate cooked cereal muffins and beverage. They practice garment stitching and neck arm facings while preparing a Christmas lesson titled Goodies from Your Kitchen and a new orange taffy activity for the Adult class.
Sixty years ago on December 3 a soft weather pattern followed a thunderstorm with rain overnight. C E Clifford bought the J B Campbell property near Ed Wilcox and plans to move to Rolfe. C L Strong started a 160 acre homestead at Stillwater Oklahoma. A K Cleveland of Plover celebrates a 12 pound boy. Nellie Struthers of Rolfe to teach Murray school and Gabriel Archer to teach Coopertown school.
The high school vocal groups now active include boys' and girls' glee clubs mixed chorus girls' sextette girls' trio and boys' quartet highlighting the school's ensemble offerings and participation.
A Demorest Medal Contest will be held in the Presbyterian church Monday evening, December 7, 1891, with Aggie Grove Julia Ratcliff Martha Day Hopsie Hayward Beatrice Coffin and Bessie Warden among the Miss contestants and Henry Bright Fay Dickinson among the male contenders for a silver medal. Nearby items note prices at the Bee Hive, a 30 year ago wedding, a fatal automobile accident, births, local appointments, a diphtheria quarantine, and winter schedule changes for Sunday services at the Methodist church.
