Pruning guidance for lilacs and spireas from Iowa State
Horticul turist Ben Vances office at Iowa State University reports heavy mail with gardening questions. Readers are advised to prune lilacs after flowering by removing three or four large canes to soil level and keep new suckers. Remove spent blooms to avoid bud loss. Severe pruning to ground level can renew Anthony Waterer spireas and Froebel spireas, with new shoots forming from the crown. Annual early spring pruning yields compact shrubs and eliminates dead wood.
