Alderman Avard Appointed as Merk's Successor in City Council

The Aldermanic meeting accepted Alderman Merk's long‑pending resignation and named J. H. Avard to serve the remainder of the term. George A. Pingree was appointed to replace Engineer Crosier at the city pumping plant. The panel discussed hitching racks along surbs and opened bids for 1500 feet of chain and posts. The city attorney was ordered to sue National Surety Co. bondsmen to recover city funds from the failed State Bank. Several ordinances were read and passed for the last time.

Beethoven Club Hosts Afternoon Concert by Young Ladies

The Beethoven Music Club met at Mies Coleman's home Saturday afternoon and enjoyed a fine program by Misses Velma Hopper Emily Hall Jemima Merk Ruby Mattox Bessie Searls and Lillian Nesbitt. The Sans Souci Club gathered with Mrs Myrtle Dawley on Tuesday and heard papers on state institutions and homes for orphans the deaf and blind and feeble minded followed by a dainty lunch.

Rocky Ford Wins in High Wind to Top Las Animas

The Rocky Ford high school baseball team defeated Las Animas 12 to 5 in windy conditions. A good crowd enjoyed snappy play though the wind hindered some actions. Next up, Rocky Ford hosts La Junta on Saturday April 11 in the Southern Colorado league series.

State Bank Receivership Claims Totals Restated

G M Hall receiver of the State Bank of Rocky Ford submits schedules of $478 259 93 in claims to the court broken into deposits and similar items 276 418 41 other banks and loans 200 304 90 and salaries and supplies 1 516 62 The court may hear the claims soon with aims to limit preferences and set offs to keep all creditors and depositors on equal footing for dividend distribution.

Burglar strikes Christian and Presbyterian churches on Friday night and steals cash from their receptacles. Christian church lost about eight dollars and Presbyterian church roughly twenty dollars. No clues found for the thief.

New John L. Bonta Mercantile to Open Rocky Ford Store

John L. Bonta signs a lease for the lower floor of the I. O. O. F. building and plans a large general department store in Southern Colorado. A stock company with $50,000 capital will be formed with local farmers as stockholders as Bonta moves from Rock Port to Rocky Ford.
