Captain Wartman Dies in Evansville After Long Public Service
Capt. J. W. Wartman long held as a trusted Rockport figure died Monday at his Evansville home at daybreak. A Virginia native born 1832, he studied law in Rockport, served as provost marshal in the Civil War, and later as US commissioner for over 46 years. He married Mary Graham in 1857. five children survived, with a number predeceased. Funeral set for Friday at 9 in Evansville, Dr. Hurlstone officiating, Oak Hill cemetery interment.
