Big Fourth of July Parade Draws Record Crowds to Rockport

Spencer county independence day celebration prepares for a major event in Rockport with thousands expected. A parade from Elm to Main and the fair grounds opens at 11 with bands, rifle club drills, Boy Scouts and Camp Fire Girls. The day includes athletic events, races, marbles and contests, plus Red Cross participation and free band concerts aboard a Newbury special.

Shooting at Ice Cream Supper Near City

In Africa six miles south of town a shooting occurred at an ice cream supper at the schoolhouse. Norman Shaw shot Abram Taylor after accusing him of paying attention to Shaw's wife. Taylor was wounded in the hip and, though in pain, not believed to be in danger. He was seen in the city on Monday and Tuesday.

Wheat Harvest Shows Strong countywide Prospects

A visit across Spencer County last Sunday finds early wheat fields mature and rye cut in spots. Crops appear generally excellent with young corn healthy, tobacco planted areas promising, gardens prolific, and meadowlands in decent condition. Overall prospects for the season are good and improving.

Slow to Register in Spencer County After Woman Suffrage

Amid Indiana women’s suffrage, about 10 000 voters exist in Spencer County but only 300 have registered since the board began sessions. Many remain unregistered, protesting the new law, with broad resistance and some voters cursing in opposition.

Knife attack at Huebschman mill leaves man badly wounded

Theo Hunter attacked Wm. Jones at the Huebschman grist mill in Lamar last Friday, stabbing his neck with a knife after accusing him of stealing money. Jones almost bled to death before recovering. Hunter was arrested by Sheriff Floyd Chapman and jailed, later bonded for $250 for the next circuit term.

Mrs Schulte of Evansville Dies at 87

Augusta Schulte consort of Wm 5 Schulte died at her Evansville home after a lingering illness aged 87. Her remains were buried in Oak Hill cemetery Wednesday at 1 30 pm. She was born in Spencer county at Gentryville, daughter of Henry and Venia Koenig. Survived by her husband a one year old son three sisters Mrs Louis Halbruge Mrs Dan Stineker Venia Koenig and a brother Henry.

Marine enlistment alters Rockport postal route

Harold Schumaker a rural route carrier on route 1 out of Rockport has enlisted in the marine corps. He passed examination at Evansville last week and will depart tomorrow for Louisville Ky for final examination then to Port Royal S C for training. John Long will replace him on route 1. The government allows postal workers to enlist in the army or navy and reserves their positions afterward.

Evansville Woman Dies At Home At Age Forty Six

Miss Elizabeth Turnham died at her Evansville home last Sunday at 4 80 a m age 46 3 1 21. She grew up in Rockport daughter of Mr and Mrs Thos R Turnham and is survived by her father and two brothers. Her remains were brought to Rockport and funeral services were held at Mrs Willis Snyders home Tuesday afternoon at 8 conducted by Rev M O Robbins with interment in Sunset Hill.

Five Pruitt Siblings Serve Nation From Spencer County

In Spencer County Indiana, David S. Pruitt and wife of Gentryville have eight sons. five are in the U S Army. Rufus serves in China on his third enlistment, Herman with heavy artillery in Panama, Harry recalled from three years service and possibly in France, Proctor enlisted last fall, AY. wsariay and John are at Montana posts. The family sacrifices are noted as among the greatest in the county.

Boy Bitten by Dog Receives Pasteur Treatment

Albert Krieger 12, son of F W Krieger, was bitten on the leg by a small dog on Tuesday afternoon. Despite no hydrophobia germs found, precautionary Pasteur treatment is started by Dr Weiss after sending the dog's head to Indianapolis lab.

Evansville fund drive names Spencer county organizer

J W Dunham of Lima Ohio named county organizer for Spencer county in a campaign to raise 1 000 000 to move Moores Hill college to Evansville. An executive committee of local citizens was appointed to solicit in the county.

Spencer County Red Cross Drive Reaches 5633.75 Dollars

Spencer county and Rockport area donations total 5633.75 dollars by noon Wednesday. Ohio township citizens contributed 3783.65 dollars, with gifts ranging from five cents to 100 dollars. Few captains outside Ohio township have reported larger increases.

Baby Halbruge Dies in Lincoln Avenue Home

Charles Morgan Halbruge Jr the infant son of Mr and Mrs Charles Morgan Halbruge died at their Lincoln Avenue home last Monday morning June 25 at 7 o clock aged 1 year 3 months and 13 days Funeral services were held at the residence by Rev R C Hartman and interment followed in Sunset Hill The baby became ill of cholera infantum last Friday while Mrs Halbruge was visiting relatives in Boonville She returned home called her physician Dr C D Ehrman and Dr H G Weiss but they could not halt the disease and the child died within three days The loss is described as the first born and only child and a deep bereavement for the parents Flowers from friends are noted but cannot ease the heartbreak

Soldier Marries in Railroad Town After Enlistment

Ed Wingfield of Fargo Kentucky aged 33 joined the Third Kentucky regiment and on Monday afternoon dressed in new attire married Miss Edith Brown of Daviess County Kentucky in Rockport. The ceremony was performed by Esq Poole in the circuit clerk’s room at the courthouse at 5:30. They left on the evening boat for Owensboro.

County Board wraps up equalization of corporate property

The county board of Review has nearly finished equalizing assessments and valuing corporate property across townships. Session continues until July 8. Total taxables rise to 2,689,260 with a net personal property gain of 257,610 though two townships show losses.

Swan receives commission as First Lieutenant in engineering

Wyman R Swan son of Judge and Mrs E M Swan of this city receives a commission dated June 19 as First Lieutenant in the engineering department at Fort Leavenworth Kansas. He and Dr J C Glackman of Hafield are noted as the first Spencer County officers commissioned for service in the great war. Swan trained at Fort Benjamin Harrison and left for Leavenworth on the 15th list. He is a civil engineer by profession and may be among the first sent to France to support engineers ahead of the main forces.

New Flour Mill Retrieved For Richland Milling Co

A 7,500 pound Midget flouring mill for Richland Milling Co was towed from Owensboro to the lower landing Monday evening. The bolted and set mill, loaded on a float wagon, required nine hours to reach the heavy vehicle. Tuesday morning workers unloaded it from the barge and hauled it to the hilltop on rollers with block and tackle, powered by six horses.
