Camp Sunnyside Treats Iowa Handicapped Campers At Sunnyside
Easter Seal Society for Crippled Children and Adults of Iowa celebrates a record year at Camp Sunnyside near Ankeny. 415 Iowa youngsters and adults from 92 counties enjoyed a therapeutic residential camping season with 60 counselors. Camp plans for 1972 include fundraising to cover the $97.50 campship for those unable to pay.

Machine Shed Fire Destroys Balk Farm Near Rock Valley
A machine shed at Harry Balk’s farm four miles southeast of Rock Valley burned Monday evening. Firemen said a Balk boy was filling a mind bilge with gasoline when a spark ignited it. Shed valued at 4000 dollars, with diesel tractor four wagons loaded with oats a mini bike and other gear also lost. Equipment total about 12000 dollars, largely insured. Rock Valley and Carmel fire departments responded. Frank Eppach of local Adet found a four leaf clover in the yard.

American Legion Fall Conference Held in Hartley
The Eleventh American Legion Fall Conference convenes Saturday September 11, 1971 in Hartley at the Community Building. Registration opens 8:15 AM with District Commander Richard Kaiser presiding. Central Day at Sioux Center Planned for Alumni Friends
Central College alumni and supporters from the region will gather in Sioux Center on Sept. 12 for a Central Day. Picnic Welcomes Five New Teachers in Rock Valley City
Rock Valley City Path hosted a welcome picnic for five new teachers Jerry Lindbloom Lea McCarty Miss Nena Blezuns Miss Joleen Shafer and Mr Joanne Draager August 28 at the school site. The Rock Valley Education Association School Board and Administration organized the potluck and families attended. Afterward a social hour featured a touch football game with some men joining the youths.

RV Education Assn Holds Workshop in Rock Valley
The Rock Valley Education Association held its annual workshop August 25-27, 1971. Five new elementary and secondary teachers attended on August 25 and joined the general workstop for all teachers on August 26 and 27. Departmental meetings covered class work and textbooks, with the English department focusing on improving student writing. New enthusiasm marked the faculty as they prepared for the new school year.

Hope Haven resumes fourfold program in Rock Valley
Hope Haven in Rock Valley resumes its fourfold program with the Child Development Center the fourth initiative. The center serves twenty two profoundly handicapped children with development in communication, visual and auditory skills, self feeding, dressing, toilet training and motor coordination. Staff includes Arthur Ruiter director Barbara Top coordinator and several activity leaders assistants. The list also notes the School for Exceptional Children now eight years old serving sixty students with multiple disabilities and a Pre Vocational program serving twenty two middlers. The Work Training Center began in 1967 serving forty with work conditioning and job placement. Hope Haven serves a five state area with foster care and group homes and operates year round with hours 9:00 to 3:00 weekdays.
