Labor Day crowd fills Rock Valley celebration with derby

A crowd of about 1,100 attended Rock Valley's annual Labor Day event hosted by the VFW and the Kiwanis Club. Demolition derby heats crowned winners from John Dykstra to Stan Van Ommeren, with sponsors including Funk's Hybrid and Van Ommerman Construction. The pork barbecue consumed 740 pounds, and other activities included ring toss, bottle cap gun shoots, and floating duck prizes. Sponsors thanked local businesses for hog donations and processing.

Rock Valley Gun Club league shoot drew strong scores with George Ripperda and Russ Sithensen each at 24. John Bauman, Jim Van Berkum and John Miller tied at 24, Willie Jonker and Robert Moeller at 22. Rip's Scattergunners led team action with first place and 3 points, Moeller's All-Stars and Alvord Aces tied for second. New team Doc's Sportsmen joined the league this week. Lyle Kersbergen shot a perfect 9 in golf. Mark Bauman led juniors with 20.

Four Hunting Seasons Open Saturday for Squirrel Rabbit Fox and Groundhog

The State Conservation Commission announces opening of four hunting seasons on Saturday September 11 1972 for squirrel rabbit fox and groundhog with daily bag limits and possession limits. Fox trapping begins October 30 and groundhog season runs to November 30. Youth under 16 must carry an Iowa hunting license and be accompanied by a licensed adult.

Mease Van Beek Seeks Unopposed School Board Seat

Mease Van Beek is the sole candidate in the Community School board election for area four. The district north of Highway 13 votes statewide for the director, who must reside in that area. Judson Smith, longtime predecessor for 16 years, declines reelection. Polls at City Hall open noon to 8 p.m.

Voc School Director Election Nomination Papers Filed

Nomination papers for the Nash west Lawa Vocational School board of directors and NIVS Directors were filed. Incumbents include Ken Scharpi in District I and Douwie Vander Schaaf in District VII with other names listed for open seats. The NIVS election will occur September 13 at the same site as the regular school elections. voters cast ballots only in their director district.

Deer License Deadlines Hit Sept. 15 in Des Moines

The Town Conservation Commission urges Sportsmen to file for 1971 shotgun muzzleloader licenses by 4 30 p.m. September 14 at the State Conservation Commission License Section 3004th Sweet Des Moines Iowa 50319. Four hospital staff complete Modified Diets course

Four employees of the dietary department at Hegg Memorial Hospital Rock Valley have finished a 12 lesson correspondence home study course in Modified Diets. The program is run by the Tawa State Department of Health to improve hospital and nursing home food quality.

Rockets Report for The Season Rock Valley Football

Rock Valley's football team opened practice on August 20 with 54 boys, led by 11 returning lettermen. They must replace 14 graduating seniors and held an intersquad scrimmage on September 4 for parents and fans. The 1971 season opens hosting Kingsley Pierson on September 10.

Minor Car Collision In Rock Valley And Inwood

Autos driven by John Dodeward of Rock Valley and Kevin Dyksia of Inwood were in a minor accident Monday. Dyksia backed from a curb near the bowling alley while Dodeward traveled west on 4th Street. Damage to Dodeward's 1961 Ford Was estimated at 96 dollars with no damage to Dyksia's 1967 Mustang. No deductible was given.

Rock Valley Golf Club Hosts Men’s City Tourney Saturday

Damages Reported In Two Vehicle Collision In Rock Valley

Rock Valley police report about 850 in damages after a two vehicle crash Tuesday afternoon. Edwin Post drove a Farmers Elevator panel truck and Bonita Bouma drove a 1971 Chrysler. Bouma backed from a curb in front of the post office. damages totaled 350 to the car and 500 to the tractor. Bouma cited for failure to yield. No injuries reported.

Dordt College Open House To Showcase New Buildings

Dordt College invites the public to an open house on Friday September 24 starting at 2:00 pm to view two new campus buildings the classroom block and the student union. Guided campus tours begin from the West Commons with group times, a buffet chicken supper, and a water service at 7:30 pm outside near the gymnasium. The concert band will perform and President Haan and Board President De Vries will offer brief remarks and prayers. All buildings except dorms will be open for inspection with refreshments available and the new indoor pool open for tours.
