The A J Haverhals farm southwest of town suffered a total loss when a 48 barn loaded with straw burned. Firefighters from Rock Valley and Hudson were called, with painstaking efforts to save other farm structures and unresolved questions about the blaze. A separate incident at the Gus Bakker farm northeast of Rock Valley involved a tractor fire as Mr Bakker was harvesting corn, flames reaching eight feet before extinguished.
