Widening of Highway 18 in Rock Valley delayed to 1979
City officials learned last week that the Highway 18 widening through Rock Valley and Highway 75 will not start until 1979, about eight years late. The half million dollar project faces funding shortages as federal grants shrink by 19 million dollars. The council approved a plan for the highway commission to design a storm sewer along 18 to coincide with the widening, with the state paying its share in three installments once completed. Total local cost about 96 thousand dollars, with sewer line costs up to 25 to 90 dollars per running foot. Construction could begin next year if funded, but the wider 18 lane highway remains slated for 1979 unless delays recur.

Ma John Hoekstra had a night time visitor last week. When she arrived home she met a raccoon on her front sidewalk and the animal followed her to the door. It scratched at the door for a considerable length of time attempting to come in the house. It was believed the raccoon was once a pet released seeking human compassion.

Van Otterloo Car Crash Injures Passenger in Iowa
Margaret Van Otterloo escaped injury when her 1983 Chevrolet collided with a 1966 Chevrolet driven by Jetty Klumper of Edgerton Minnesota Friday night. Measles Epidemic Warning Issued By State Health Official
Dr. 4 Herron of the State Department Health warned Tuesday that red day measles outbreaks have appeared in Sions County. He urged vaccination for children under junior high age to prevent a wider epidemic, noting rubella vaccines from last year are ineffective against this strain. County immunization is only about 70 percent for under two, with 50 to 80 percent for kindergarten and younger children. Parents should consult doctors to decide on vaccination.
