Plans completed for annual Memorial Day events in town. Participants meet at the Community School at 9:00 AM for a parade including the high school band Cub and Boy Scouts and area veterans. The procession heads to Valley View Cemetery for a program starting about 10:00 led by Father Zenk.
A two car collision at Main and 15th Street early this week caused more than 3300 in damage. Gerald Lyon Steimson of Hult, northbound on Main, collided with Linda Jean Mulder of Hawarden when Mulder pulled out from a stop sign near Valley Bakery. Steimson sustained extensive damage to his vehicle. Mulder received a ticket for failure to yield the right of way.
The Looking Glass adds two operators Linda Huisman and Sharon Winterfeld who trained at Stewarts Beauty School Sioux City. They specialize in wig fitting and styling and other beauty specialties. A public offer advertises this introduction to customers. Vietnam era veterans are completing military service and returning home at about 70,000 monthly, per the Veterans Administration.
Local weather observer Pat Beamer reports Rock Valley received about 0.42 inches of rain on Saturday with showers continuing. Linux City logged nearly 1 inch and moved slightly above May's average rainfall.
The Rock Valley Kiwanis Club reports cleanup at the Rock River Access Area is finished and ready for Memorial Day picnics. Picnic tables will be available, with volunteers from Kiwanis and Boy Scouts aiding. The Sioux County Conservation Board owns the park and funded the project.
The public is invited to a Memorial Day breakfast at Rock Valley Golf Course. Served from 7am to 9am. Everyone is welcome to attend.
Water service in the Rock Valley area shifts to a coin operated system. City officials say the change eliminates bookkeeping and benefits consumers by simplifying access to water.
John Riessen a Rock Valley junior at Morningside College will study in Munich Germany next Fall. He will take 18 hours at Goethe Institute and credits will transfer through Indiana University. He will also study at a teachers college to learn about the German education system and attend the Oktoberfest with a local pen pal thirty miles from Munich. Scholarships from Stiftung Volkswagenwerk and the U S Office of Education support the trip with partial funding.
Rock Valley High School Industrial Arts Club and FRA moved ten completed 8 ft picnic tables to the County Park northeast of town Monday evening. The groups built the tables over three days last week, donating labor while the County Park Commission covers materials. Under advisers Hanan Vander Schaaf and Don Kaberna the 2x10 fir planks were treated to a rustic brown, drilled, and mounted on ready-made steel bases.
A 1966 Rock Valley item lists women golfers partners for season play and a detailed Bridge Leagues schedule. It notes dues due by June 6 to join the league, substitute rules for absences, lunch and dessert events, and contact points Mary Desmet Polly Hegg Betty Schemmer Eleanor Simonsen for participation.
Christ Lutheran of Alvord plans a cornerstone laying after the 10:36 a.m. worship service for a two story education addition finished after two years planning and nine months construction. The project includes classrooms a chapel a walkout basement and full carpeting funded by a $10 000 gift from Karl Hasselmann of Houston in memory of his parents.
The Rocket track team finished its 1968 season at the Conference meet in Rock Rapids on May 20. West Lyon won, Roc cas placed fifth. Maurice Orange City contributed strong scorers led by Alcon with 46 points. Peter Van Noort earned a first in the 2 mile run with 9:31. Dean Landegent was fourth in the 440 yard dash and the mile run.
Mrs Helen Thayer and Mrs Joline Bachmann assisted with the operetta The Wedding of Jack and Jill at Rock Valley Community College. Thayer helped with directing and Bachmann managed the musical score. The Bee later corrected that Mrs Timmer held the directorial role.
Greg Lawjens, 20, of Hull Ta was arrested by Grover Pettit and Sheriff George Sleeper Sunday evening following a lengthy inquiry into a March 22 1868 tear gas incendiary bomb thrown into Sheldon Community Building. The incident forced occupants to evacuate. Lawjens to appear in Major Atkins Court on Friday May 31 at 1:30 p.m.
First Reformed Church will hold a Bible class starting Monday June 3 and a Vacation Bible School from June 3 to 14 with Saturday option. Programs for grades 4–9 run at the Christian School on 17th Street and Kindergarten to 3rd at the First Reformed Church on Beth Street. Registrations to 1505 6th Street. no preregistration required. Daily offerings fund expenses with excess donated to Hope Haven.
A high powered rifle bullet struck the Sheldon residence of John Kruger at 8 a.m. Monday entering a bedroom window. It pierced a wall and lodged in a living room chair. Mr and Mrs Kruger and their four children were home but unharmed. A baby was sleeping in the affected bedroom. Police have no clues on the origin as the investigation continues.
Three Rock Valley youths from Augustana’s 279 member graduating class received diplomas on May 24. Marianne Calsbeex earned a BS in Elementary Education Russell Desong completed a degree in Speech and Drama and Lewis Henry Rhode received a BS in Elementary Education.
The Rock Vacy Gun Club holds a Memorial Day shoot with 18 trophies. Traps open at 10 a.m. for practice and the event starts soon after. Shells and lunch are available on the grounds. Participants may shoot doubles between 10 and 1 to speed the program.
The feature profiles Jim Boogerd operator of Sim's Body and Alignment Shop in Rock Valley. Born in Hull in 1926 he trained as an auto repairer before Navy service in World War II. After the service he specialized in body and fender work and opened his Hull shop later moving to Rock Valley where he now employs two men at 16th Street.
Several groups of area youths will join 8 W L M Summer Work, a mission effort by the Christian Reformed Church. Participants travel to Palo Alto California Salt Lake City Utah and Rapid City South Dakota, departing June 4 or June 6 and returning July 10 or July 15. Named travelers include Gloria Kramer Elaine De Stigter Brenda Den Hartog Peter De Yager Roger Kragt Glenda Van de Kamp Berdella Van Peursem Karen Van Ti Robert Vanilen Bosch Lois Gertitsma Gwen Droog Sandi Van Maanen Glesida Verture Vicky Bonnema Helen Hengeveld Linda Van Beek Gert Haverhals Cheryl Klomp.
The women’s bowling league closed the 67 68 season with a Valley Park potluck. New officers were named for the Monday league led by Lucille Manning as president and Cora Yer Hoer as vice president. Edith Gayer is secretary treasurer and Tillie Kock is sergeant at arms. The Thursday league govern by Marie Grossenburg president and Sally Timmer vice president with Lorraine De Brin secretary treasurer and Mary Jo Peter sergeant at arms. City association officers include Irene Riese president Berdena Buma vice president Carol Van Engen secretary Wilma Stolts treasurer Elaine Halstein sergeant at arms.
Dordt College announces Miss Grenda Ver Burg of Sioux Center in the 1968 graduating class. She earns the A.B. degree with honors, majoring in music education. Next fall she will teach kindergarten and music in Sheboygan’s Christian School system.
