Plans are complete for the annual Memorial Day services to be held Thursday May 30. Participants meet at the Community School at 9:00 AM for the parade including the high school band Cub and Boy Scouts and area veterans. The parade goes to Valley View Cemetery where Father Zenk will deliver the address as the program starts about 10:00 AM.
A special Honors assembly on May 14 awarded Western students major recognitions. Recipients include Calvin College Freshmen Scholarship Ven Vechoef, Alumni Freshmen Grant Darlene Van Engen, and Merit Award Steve Slager. Other honorees span Dordt College Geneva De Kam, Trinity Evie Van Zanten, and National Union Scholars Lane Honnema Mareia van Engen.
A Friday evening crash at 6:00 involved Harvard Voerburg driving a 1985 Ford and Mrs Bert Rus in a 1962 Ford near Valley Manor. Damages totaled 900 dollars with $800 to Voerburg and $100 to Rus. Rus cited for failure to yield.
Friday May 17 trap shoot at Rock Valley Gun Club featured 21 shooters from Iowa Minnesota and South Dakota. Oscar Aasheim Canton and Ron Henderson tied for first in Class A with 49 of 50. A three way tie for second in Class D with 48 of 50 included Wally Sonnenschein Pipe Stone Elmer Treeders Alton and Lyle Kersbergen Milford. Aasheim Canton and Gregg Schumaker Alcester tied for first in Class B with 44 of 59. Ed Knaack Rock Rapids and Hein Kosters shared second with 44 of 59. Henderson won Class A handicap with 47 of 80. Milford Aasheim second with 45 of 50. Class B handicap winner was Oscar Aasheim with 42 of 50 and Hein Kosters second with 38 of 50. Blom of Aston shot 44 of 80 in doubles. Kersbergen and Henderson tied for second with 41 of 50. Henderson won high over all with 96 of 190 and high all around with 137 of 150. Perfect 25s were shot by Paul Vander Waude Hull Oscar Ansheim Lyle Kersbergen and Ron Henderson. Next shoot Merrilia Day Trophy on May 30.
The class of 1968 with four graduates will speak at Western Christian High on May 23 at 7:45 P M. Rev James Lent of Grand Rapids Michigan delivers the commencement address and Geneva De Kam is class speaker. The second grade class of Mrs Timmer staged the Wedding of Jack and Tall for mothers and later fathers and the general community. Directed by Mrs Timmer Judy Vander Ploeg and many mothers assisted with costumes. The Rock Valley Betterment Council met at Red Rock Inn on May 24 1968 at 7 00 am with Dr C J Schroeder presiding. Six members attended and fluoridation findings were reported noting state funding covers half equipment costs for towns under 2000 population. The group urged fluoride use in drinking water and planned to send a delegate to discuss council action while also noting delayed speed limit sign installation and arranging O C Liaboe as next host for the meeting.
Marcella Cleveringa and Glenda De Baer of Rock Valley from Western Christian High competed in the state back meet in Des Moines last Saturday. They ran the 440 yard relay and earned blue ribbons and medals in events including the 60 and 100 yard dashes, 820 shuttle relay, and 440 relays. Marcella is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Roger Cleveringa and Glenda is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Gerrit De Boer.
Dr. Dennis Starief of the Iowa State University Evaniates Departmen will discuss the Balance of Payments Problem and The Gold Crisis at the Community Building in Sheldon on Tuesday May 98 at p.m. The meeting is a public affairs program of lowe State University and the Extension Distrets of Sioux Osceola Lyon and O'Brien Counties. No admission will be charged.

Muriel Boeve and soprano Dyan Hofmeyer headline a joint recital in Northwestern College Chapel on Wednesday May 22 at 8 p.m. Boeve performs Bach and Beethoven. Hofmeyer sings with Kathleen Harms piano accompaniment. Both students study under local instructors. public invited. Sherry Klamp, 1988 Western Christian graduate, awarded Dordt College scholarship for 1968-69 academic year for high achievement. participates in Summer Workshop In Missions this summer.
The American Legion Auxiliary met in V. FPW Hall on Tuesday May 14 with nineteen members present. Plans were made for the Poppy sale and a program read by poppy chairman Mrs Alan Sonthuis. Hostesses were Mrs Allen Bonthuis and Mrs Jake Vande Weerd. The piece notes support for veterans and that Poppy Day aids war victims, with poppies sold a few days before May 25 Rock Valley remembrance day.
Mr and Mrs Charlie De Jong and their son Mike plan to travel to San Francisco California this Friday. Mr De Jong will attend a 49 week Advance Medical Specialists purse. The couple previously lived in Frankfurt Germany while he served with the Navy medical corps.
Mrs Toni Van Guobeest announced this week plans to open a beauty salon in her home on Hiway 18 on June 3. A contest will choose the shop name with the winner receiving a prize. Further details appear in another advertisement in this issue.
The Sheldon unit segment will be honored with a 2 breakfast Thursday May 23 at the Community Building in Sheldon. Bowling leagues for men and women completed their seasons and all cam trophies were awarded. Page five features the champions and sponsors with pictures.
Registration for summer recreation will be held June 1 at City Hall from 2 to 4 PM. Each child pays a $1 entrance fee. Suggested activities include baseball, softball, tennis, baton twirling, arts and crafts, and children's theatre with story telling sponsored by the Library. The council invites suggestions and requests teachers or assistants to contact the Summer Recreation Council at the local post office by Saturday, June.
The International Christian Students Exchange selected Mr and Mrs Cleveringa of rural Rock Valley to host Hans-Uwe Schwedier a 17 year old German junior at Western Christian High School for the 1963 68 term. The Cleveringas have three children and farm 240 acres near Rock Valley.
