Rock Valley Men Complete Training at Fort Ord
Four soldiers from Rock Valley completed eight weeks of advanced infantry training on February 24 at Fort Ord California. Privates Dennis L Van Maanen Jay A Mulder Douglas Kooima and Charles D Kempema received instruction in stealth unit tactics and weapons including the M 14 rifle M 60 machine gun and the 155 rocket launcher. Each soldier is listed with his parentage and home address.

Challenging the Northwest Territory Band Concert Benefit
Pamela Porter, daughter of Mr and Mrs Al Porter of Rock Valley, a University of Iowa junior, joined the Scottish Highlanders in a March 1 ceremony. A Gordon Eastman show and band concert is set for March 14 at the new gym for Heeg Memorial Hospital fund. Tickets cost 1.50 adults 75 cents children. The program opens with a 45 minute Community School Band under Harlan Vander Jerg, followed by the color film Challenging the Northwest Territory featuring Eastman, a noted wildlife photographer. The film is a first color recording from Canada’s Mackenzie Mountains and promotes hunting and fishing in the Northwest Territory. Eastman is described as a pioneer hunter and filmmaker with extensive outdoor magazine coverage.

Funeral services for Mrs. Gilbert De Ruiter 75 of Doon were conducted at First Reformed Church with Rev. Jake Van Mantgem officiating. Born December 15 1896 in the Netherlands she moved to the United States at age 12 and lived in Doon the last 30 years. She married February 4 1920 at Sandstone Minnesota. A Rock Valley area court awarded 2000 to Margaret Caffrey in a car collision case that arose from a December 5 1862 incident near Rock Valley Iowa. The trial involved Gabe Caffrey and Margaret Caffrey versus Ergin J Lang Jr and Robert A Babson with a jury verdict partial against Lang Jr and Babson and a separate suit by Trina Van Engen and Edward Van Engen against Cornelia De Haan and Albert De Haan executors of Henry A B De Haan estate.
