Iowa Teachers Shaped by 1972 Supply and Demand Study
A study by Dr. Orrin Nearhoof and Dr. Trevor G. Hoen reports that 60 percent of elementary and 62 percent of secondary Iowa teachers hired in 1972 were beginners. About one third earned degrees from Iowa institutions. The survey cites 95 percent district responses and shows shifts in vacancies, especially at the elementary level, with two thirds of new hires holding Iowa degrees and a gender split favoring women overall.
