Weather notes show Rock Valley below yearly precipitation normal

Weather observer Pam Beamer reports 11.40 inches of precip for the year with January 0.81, February 0.61, March 1.27, April 0.07, May 2.51 and June 4.63 inches, plus 3.05 inches in July to date. Last Thursday’s rain 1.59 inches, Sunday 0.16, and Monday Tuesday 0.30 inches. No major damage reported despite high winds.

Commercial Club Will Meet Men

The Rock Valley Commercial Club holds its regular monthly meeting next Monday at 6:00 p.m. in the Y.F.W. Hall. The note adds a quip that people are like steamboats, rooting loudest in fog.

Mishap at pool sidelines Beth Ann Beamer’s pelvic fracture

Beth Ann Beamer, daughter of Mr and Mrs Paul Beamer, cracked her pelvic bone in a pool mishap last Wednesday and will spend about six weeks in bed. Orientation notices at Iowa State University include Gene Buckley and Rodney Hulshof among incoming freshmen in engineering and agriculture. Becky Mossman, daughter of Lawrence Mossman of Iowa Falls, has a parakeet named Henry and a year-old orphan kept by the family. Henry loves marshmallows.

Scouts Week at Prairie Gold Camp Near Okoboji

Troop 217 led by Bob Widson departs Rock Valley Sunday to Prairie Gold Camp at Lake Okoboji for a week of camping sports and activities. The group notes arrival in rain, tent setup, health checks, bathing in cold water, campfire ceremonies, canoeing archery and a mock war, parent night events, Arrow ceremonies, buddy tag hunt, awards and a closing campfire before departure.

Fewer Shotgun Deer Permits This Year In Iowa

The Iowa Conservation Commission set 12 000 shotgun deer licenses for the season down from 20 500 in 1966 to curb hunting pressure and boost population. Deer habitat quality and limited timber affect growth, while zones and a lottery system replace first come first served. Applications run Oct 1 to Oct 15 with five hunting zones.

Eileen Van Soest of Rock Valley is among 53 students from Wisconsin and beyond enrolled in a six week workshop on exceptional children at the University of Lund Sweden this summer. The course, led by Dr. Melvin E Kaufman of the Wisconsin department of behavioral disabilities, covers emotionally disturbed and mentally retarded children with weekly guest lectures from Scandinavian experts and field visits to rehabilitation facilities in Copenhagen and beyond.

Sheldon Flower Show Opens Doors For Public Display

Special Teal Season Set for Sept 13 to 21

The State Conservation Commission announced a special teal season from September 13 to 21 with daily shooting hours from 9:00 a.m. to sunset September 19 for the remainder.
