Weather observer Pam Beamer reports 11.40 inches of precip for the year with January 0.81, February 0.61, March 1.27, April 0.07, May 2.51 and June 4.63 inches, plus 3.05 inches in July to date. Last Thursday’s rain 1.59 inches, Sunday 0.16, and Monday Tuesday 0.30 inches. No major damage reported despite high winds.
The Rock Valley Commercial Club holds its regular monthly meeting next Monday at 6:00 p.m. in the Y.F.W. Hall. The note adds a quip that people are like steamboats, rooting loudest in fog.
Beth Ann Beamer, daughter of Mr and Mrs Paul Beamer, cracked her pelvic bone in a pool mishap last Wednesday and will spend about six weeks in bed. Orientation notices at Iowa State University include Gene Buckley and Rodney Hulshof among incoming freshmen in engineering and agriculture. Becky Mossman, daughter of Lawrence Mossman of Iowa Falls, has a parakeet named Henry and a year-old orphan kept by the family. Henry loves marshmallows.
Troop 217 led by Bob Widson departs Rock Valley Sunday to Prairie Gold Camp at Lake Okoboji for a week of camping sports and activities. The group notes arrival in rain, tent setup, health checks, bathing in cold water, campfire ceremonies, canoeing archery and a mock war, parent night events, Arrow ceremonies, buddy tag hunt, awards and a closing campfire before departure.
Shirlee Van Zee daughter of Mr and Mrs Richard Van Zee will represent Rock Valley in the Queen contest at Soybean Days in Sheldon July 15 16 and it She is sponsored by the Rock Valley Commercial Club Mrs Van Zee a Rock Valley Community School graduate class of 1969 has been active in many school activities and youth group at First Reformed Church Shirlee will enter Sioux Falls School of Nursing this Fall.
The Iowa Conservation Commission set 12 000 shotgun deer licenses for the season down from 20 500 in 1966 to curb hunting pressure and boost population. Deer habitat quality and limited timber affect growth, while zones and a lottery system replace first come first served. Applications run Oct 1 to Oct 15 with five hunting zones.
Eileen Van Soest of Rock Valley is among 53 students from Wisconsin and beyond enrolled in a six week workshop on exceptional children at the University of Lund Sweden this summer. The course, led by Dr. Melvin E Kaufman of the Wisconsin department of behavioral disabilities, covers emotionally disturbed and mentally retarded children with weekly guest lectures from Scandinavian experts and field visits to rehabilitation facilities in Copenhagen and beyond.
George Bluejays coached by Batty Brandt won their sixth straight, take sole second place as West Lyon and others were rained out, Rock Valley 9-4 over Maurice-Orange City in the only other game. standings show Boyden Hull, West Lyon, Sioux Center, and George in contention with three games remaining. Augustana College lists two students on the Dean's List for the second semester with averages of 8.0 or higher.

The Farmers Elevator Company will hold its annual meeting at Rock Valley Community School auditorium at 8:00 p.m. Monday July 28. Directors will be elected and other business discussed. Bill Turner of Felco Fort Dodge will be keynote. Musical entertainment includes a one man variety show with piano duets and gadgets. Ladies invited. A free gift and lunch tickets will be distributed. Rock Valley authorities announce a new police radio system for emergencies only, with contact paths via Hegg Memorial Hospital or the police desk.
Ronald Feekes son of Mr and Mrs Henry Feekes of Sioux Center promoted to Lance Corporal June 26 in the United States Marine Corps. He left for Vietnam March 1 and serves with a sniper division. Marion Scholten 19 son of Mr and Mrs John G Scholten of Hudson SD assigned June 3 to short Aviation Brigade in Vietnam as a repairman. Ada W Var Kley 21 son of Mr and Mrs Gemit Van Kiey of Doon promoted to Army Specialist Four June 13 at Fort Carson CO serving with the 89th Brigade as a jeep driver.
Hundreds of patients attended an appreciation day for General Practitioner Dr CA Nicoll in Panora at the end of June. A reception followed in his honor. Dr Nicoll has practiced medicine in Panora for 41 years.
Mr and Mrs Klaas Hendriks of Rock Valley will observe their 67th anniversary with an open house at their home on July 17 from 2 30 to 5 00 p m hosted by their three children Alfred Claussen Jen ner Join Hendriks and John Van Hunnik with families The couple married in Holland in 1910 and moved to Rock Valley later They have 18 grandchildren 73 great grandchildren and 9 great great grandchildren The couple requests no gifts
Sioux County Court acted on multiple cases this week including Judgement for Farmers Mutual Coop against Rodney Vanden Brink for 133.86 with interest and costs, probate actions for Anna M. Jansen and Minnetta Brown, conservatorship appointments, divorces with child custody and support, and several guilty pleas for overweight and driving while intoxicated with fines and license suspensions. Executorships and final reports in numerous estates were approved or closed, with several guardianships concluded.
Army Major John S. Peppers of Extra, a 1959 Iowa State University graduate and son of Mr and Mrs Sherman Peppers, received the first Meritorious Service Medal at Holgs in the U S Southern Command Canal Zone. The Peppers family plans a move to Fort Leavenworth Kansas this summer.
The annual Flower Show, organized by the Sheldon Chamber of Commerce and the Sheldon Garden Club, runs from 2 p.m. to 9 p.m. with free admission. Registration is 9:30 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. and judging 1:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. Five generations of Harris family gathered for a reunion in Algona and Clarion relations were noted.
The State Conservation Commission announced a special teal season from September 13 to 21 with daily shooting hours from 9:00 a.m. to sunset September 19 for the remainder. Hunters will need only a regular hunting license and a federal waterfowl stamp this year, not special permits, and must avoid killing other species if repeats are desired.
